Baldwin-Wallace Swimming & Diving Teams Defeat John Carroll University

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated John Carroll University with scores of 123-79 on the men's side and 142-98 on the women's side.

Leading the men's team tallying three wins on the night were seniors Alex de la Pena (Elyria) and Luke Grilli (Londonderry, N.H.)de la Pena won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:04.15, the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.95 seconds, and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:43.15.  Grilli won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.48, the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.56, and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay. Joining de la Pena and Grilli on the 200-yard medley relay was sophomore Nick Gattozzi (Strongsville) and freshman Vincent Colwell (Parma/ Normandy). Gattozzi also won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:05.77. Also winning multiple events was sophomore Sean Sonnenberg (Napoleon) in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:22.83 and was a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:33.37. Joining Sonnenberg on the 200-yard freestyle relay was Colwell, freshman Jordan Irwin (Westerville/ South), and senior Mark Harris (Manasquan, N.H. / Wall Township). Also earning wins tonight was junior Jake Saul (Napoleon) in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.68 and sophomore Matt Laughlin (Centerville) in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.00.

Opening up and finishing strong for the women's side were two first place relays. Starting the night off was the 200-yard medley relay, winning in a time of 1:56.83 with relay members senior Sarah Anders (North Ridgeville), junior Stephanie Markley (Mansfield/ Senior), senior Sara Gombash (Perrysburg/ Notre Dame), and sophomore Mallory Hoffman (Gahanna/ St. Francis DeSales). Ending the meet was the 200-yard freestyle relay, winning in a time of 1:45.99 with relay members sophomore Kate Ritchey (White Oak, Pa./ McKeesport), freshman Ryan Reynolds (Westerville/ South), Anders, and junior Ambica Iyengar (Bangalore, India/ Mount Carmel College). Earning individual wins for the Yellow Jackets included, Anders with a win in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:05.31, Gombash in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.33, Hoffman in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:01.84, Ritchey in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.04, Reynolds in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:18.21, senior Katie Claus (Huron/ Senior) in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:44.75, and senior Katie Krzywicki (Brook Park/ Midpark) in the required 1-meter dive with a point total of 159.90.

Both team will resume competition on Saturday, Jan. 20 when they travel to Ada, Ohio to take on Ohio Northern University in a dual meet beginning at 1:00 p.m.
