Baldwin-Wallace College Women's Swim Team is in First Place and the Men are

Fourth After Day One of the 2004-2005 OAC Championships

BEREA, OHIO —The Baldwin-Wallace College men's and women's swimming and diving team complete day one of the 2004-2005 OAC Championships held on the campus of John Carroll University in University Heights.

The Yellow Jacket women are currently in first place with 67 points followed by John Carroll with 58 points and Ohio Northern is third with 56 points. In the men's team standings, B-W is in fourth place with 43 points and trails third place Wilmington by six points. John Carroll leads the men's competition with 63 points followed by Ohio Northern with 59 points.

Freshman Ambica Iyengar (INDIA) was the lone individual winner for the women. She took top honors in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:19.89. Senior Kristen Showalter (Bowling Green), the defending OAC Champion in the 500-yard free, posted a second place finish behind Iyengar in a time of 5:24.51. Freshman Stephanie Markley (Mansfield/ Senior) rounded out the top individual performances for the women with a second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.80 seconds. The women also recorded a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, falling just 48 one-hundredths of a second shy of winning the event, with a time of 1:42.81. John Carroll posted a time of 1:42.33 to take first place. Team members for B-W included junior Emily Wood (Carrollton), Showalter, freshman Erica Brubach (Powell/ Olentangy) and Markley.

For the men, sophomore Alex de la Pena (Elyria/ Catholic) finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.88. He fell just 73 one-hundredths of a second short of ONU's Lukas Leitmaker who won the event in a time of 2:00.15. Freshman Dave Fournier (Perrysburg) also finished secoond individually in the 50-yard freestyle with a time 21.94. Wimington's David Kessler finished first in the event with a time of 21.83.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action tomorrow as the 2004-2005 OAC Championships resume at the William H. Johnson Natatorium at John Carroll. Events begin at 11:00 a.m. with the preliminary events followed by the finals at 6:00 p.m.
