Baldwin Wallace Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Teams Compete

Against Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College Today in Berea

BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin Wallace University men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed against Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College today (Friday, Jan. 21) in Berea. The men's team defeated Washington & Jefferson, 141-81, and the women lost, 123-118.

Leading the way for the women was freshman Ambica Iyengar (INDIA) who won two individual events. Iyengar posted first place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.30) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.63). Senior Kristen Showalter (Bowling Green) won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.33 and she was also a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:44.88). Team members included freshmen Stephanie Markley (Mansfield/ Senior) and Erica Brubach (Powell/ Olentangy) and junior Emily Wood (Carrollton).

For the men, sophomores Luke Grilli (Londonberry, N.H.) and Alex de la Pena (Elyria/ Catholic) and freshman Dave Fournier (Perrysburg) each won two individual events. Grilli came in first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.43) and the 100-yard backstroke (57.30 seconds). de la Pena posted first place finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:34.06 and the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:06.21. Fournier won the 50-yard freestyle (22.22 seconds) in addition to winning the 100-yard freestyle (49.36 seconds). Other individual winners included senior Nick Hanna (Napoleon) who won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 57.52 seconds and senior Keith DeVore (Mansfield/ Ontario) who won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.75. Also winning for the men was the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams. The 200-yard medley relay team won in a time of 1:45.50 with team members Hanna, DeVore, and freshmen Dan DiCicco (Canton/ Massillon Perry) and Jake Saul (Napoleon). The 200-yard freestyle relay team posted a top-time of 1:31.95 that featured Grilli, Fournier, sophomore Joe Meyer (Strongsville) and freshman Mark Smith (Sandusky/ Perkins).

In diving, sophomore Julie Stancliff (Erie, Pa./McDowell) won each of the one-meter diving events with 161.95 and 198.93 point totals, respectively.

The Yellow Jackets are next in action tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 22) when they visit Ohio Northern in a dual meet at 1:00 p.m. If both teams defeat ONU, it will be the first time in school history that both teams finish with an undefeated conference schedule. Indvidually, the men will be seeking their fourth undefeated OAC season and women will be seeking their second undefeated conference season.
