2009 OAC Championship Preview

AUSTINTOWN, OHIO – Baldwin-Wallace will host the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday-Saturday, February 19-21, at the University of Akron Ocaske Natatorium.  Preliminaries start at 11 a.m. on each day, while the finals will begin at 6 p.m. 

Five OAC schools, which sponsor swimming and diving, will vie for league title honors: Baldwin-Wallace, John Carroll, Mount Union, Ohio Northern and Wilmington.

 A year ago, the Ohio Northern men took home their fourth straight title, while the John Carroll women claimed their 16th title in 19 years.  Ohio Northern took the men's title with 305 points. Baldwin-Wallace finished second (201), Mount Union was third (156), John Carroll fourth (116) and Wilmington fifth (78). On the women's side, John Carroll won the women's team championship with 266 points, followed by Ohio Northern (257), Mount Union (151), Baldwin-Wallace (100) and Wilmington (91).

The ONU men captured six individual titles and four relay titles (200,400 and 800 free relay, the 400 medley relay, the three-meter dive, the 100, 500 and 1650 free and the 100 fly and 200 I.M.) en route to capturing the Championship.  A year ago, sophomore Michael Schultz (New Berlin, Wis./Martin Luther) won six events, including the 1650 free (16:00.82, new OAC record), the 500 free (4:36.38, new OAC record) and the 100 fly (52.36), and was part of the winning 400 free (3:12.54), 800 free (7:13.39) and 400 medley relay (3:34.97) teams. For his efforts, Schultz was named the 2008 OAC Men's Swimmer-of-the-Year.

Also taking home individual first place finishes for the Polar Bears were seniors Brett Kuhn (Tiffin/Columbian) in the 100 free (46.52) and George Chesney (North Olmsted) in the three-meter dive (474.05, NCAA B cut).

Baldwin-Wallace sophomore diver Todd Richert (North Royalton) won the one-meter diving event with an OAC record of 510.20 (NCAA B Cut) and placed second (473.80, NCAA B cut) in the three-meter diving event en route to capturing his first OAC Men’s Diver-of-the-Year award.

On the women's side, John Carroll claimed five individual titles and four relays titles (50,100,500,800 and 1650 free, the 200, 400 and 800 free relay and the 200 medley relay). JCU senior Heather Gilmour (Warren/Howland) took home three individual titles in the 50 free (24.86), 100 free (54.08) and 200 free (1:57.07) and was a member of the winning 200, 400 and 800 free relay teams. Gilmour was named the 2008 OAC Women’s Swimmer-of-the-Year.

Also earning individual first place finishes for the Blue Steaks was sophomore Heidi Benson (Strongsville) in the 500 free (5:15.49) and 1650 free (17:41.81).

Mount Union sophomore Mary Vallinger (Poland) captured both the one-meter diving event (406.30) and three-meter diving event (392.95). For her efforts she was named the 2008 OAC Women’s Diver-of- the-Year.
