AKRON, OHIO – Ohio Northern University’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams lead after day two of the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College at the University of Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium. The third and final day of competition begins with prelims at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
The Polar Bear men have totaled 196 points through two days of competition and are followed by Baldwin-Wallace (133), John Carroll (111), Mount Union (86) and Wilmington (47).
The Polar Bear women have totaled 211 points through two days of competition and are followed by John Carroll (139), Mount Union (121), Wilmington (58) and Baldwin-Wallace (44).
ONU’s women’s 200-yard medley relay team set an OAC mark with a time of 1:49.38 and the 800-yard free relay also set a conference record with a time of 7:55.51. The ONU men set their own mark in the 800 relay with a time of 6:52.55.
ONU picked up an All-OAC sweep in the men’s 200-yard freestyle as Michael Schultz, Brett Kuhn and Anders Samuelson finished one through three, respectively. Schultz set a conference record in the process with a time of 1:40.79. Polar Bear Garrett Dauch also set a conference record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.34.
B-W’s men’s 200-yard medley relay team picked up the first win of the meet for a team other than Ohio Northern as the quartet of Vince Colwell, Roman Koval, Matt Diamond and Sean Sonnenberg finished in a time of 1:36.64. Colwell also went on to win the 100-yard back with an OAC-record time of 53.81.
Mount Union’s Mike Kuzma was the first male non-ONU individual winner with a time of 4:17.72 in the 400-yard individual medley.
Wilmington’s Kacie Otting was the first female to break the streak with a 1:07.95 in the 100-yard breaststroke. John Carroll’s Samantha Mossman turned in the top performance for the Blue Streaks with a conference-record 1:00.16 in the 100 backstroke.
On the one-meter diving board, Mount Union’s Mary Vallinger totaled 416.10 points to win the event for the second consecutive season. ONU’s George Chesney won the three-meter dive on the men’s side with a pool-record score of 484.35.
