The Baldwin Wallace University Softball Team Loses a Pair of Games on Final Day
of Annual Spring Break Trip to Orlando, Florida
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University softball team lost a pair of games on Thursday, March 9 on final day of its annual spring break trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. The Yellow Jackets lost its opener to Ithaca (N.Y.) College, 6-4, and were defeated by Wartburg (Iowa) College, 8-1, in the nightcap. With the loses, the Yellow Jackets are now 5-5 overall.
In the first game against Ithaca, BW fell behind early, trailing 3-0 after three innings of play. The Yellow Jackets scored four runs in three innings highlighted by a two-run homerun by senior two-time All-American Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic) in the top of the fourth. The four-run rally would prove not to be enough as Ithaca answered with three runs of its own en route to the 6-4 victory.
On the mound, freshman Katey Munshower (Natrona Heights, Pa./ Highlands) was given her first loss of the season and is now 3-1 overall. She pitched six innings allowing six total runs, including five earned runs, in nine hits and struck out two batters. At the plate, Loudin led all BW hitters with two hits, including the homerun, and two runs batted in.
Against Wartburg, the Knights led 5-1 after three innings of play. Wartburg would later add three more runs in the top of the fifth inning for the 8-1 win. Wartburg out hit BW 12-4 and the Yellow Jackets committed four errors.
On the mound, freshman Jessica Shaffer (Brookfield) suffered her second loss of the season to fall to 2-2 for the year. She allowed five total runs, including four earned runs, eight hits, and struck out one batter in two and two-thirds innings pitched. Senior Ellen Wolke (Middletown/ Fenwick) replaced Shaffer in the third inning and allowed three runs, one earned run, four hits and two walks in four and one-third innings.
The Yellow Jackets will return to Ohio for their first northern game on Saturday, March 25 when
BW travels to Gambier to play Kenyon College in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
