The Baldwin Wallace University Softball Team Sweeps Allegheny 4-2 and 9-8 in
Nine Innings to End Season
BEREA, OHIO-- The Baldwin Wallace University softball team defeated nonleague foe Allegheny (Pa.) College today (May 2) by the scores of 4-2 and 9-8 in nine innings in its season finale doubleheader on Seniors' Day and the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea.
With its two wins, the Yellow Jackets end the season at 19-18 overall. Allegheny is now 19-21 overall.
In the first game, BW jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second and added another in the third for a 2-0 advantage. The Yellow Jackets then added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth before Allegheny came back with two in the seventh to make it close.
In the second inning, senior two-time All-American catcher-turned-shortstop Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic) reached on a single, advanced to second when the Allegheny centerfielder misplayed her hit, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a fielder's choice. In the third, BW scored when senior third baseman Vicki Munnings (Stow-Monroe Falls) drew a walk and moved to third on a single by senior pitcher Ellen Wolke (Middletown/ Fenwick) singled and scored on a passed ball.
In the sixth, Loudin walked and stole second and scored when senior catcher Molly Sersig (West Salem/ Northwestern) singled. Sersig advanced to second on a fielder's choice, to third via a fly ball and scored on a passed ball.
On the mound, Wolke gained her second win of the season to improve to 2-3 overall as she allowed eight hits and struck out three Allegheny batters and walked three others. At the plate, the Yellow Jacket offense had four timely hits compared to AC's eight.
In the second game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first and added two more in the second for a 7-0 advantage before the Gators began their comeback. AC scored two in the third to cut BW's lead to 7-2 and then scored two in the sixth and four more in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Yellow Jacket freshman first baseman Caitlin Myor (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Senior) hammered her second homerun of the game and fourth of the season to send the game into extra innings at 8-8.
In the bottom of the ninth, Wolke began the frame on second base, moved to third via a passed ball and scored when Loudin hit a game-winning single.
On the mound, Wolke gained her second win of the day to even her record at 3-3 overall. At the plate, Myor was the star-of-the-game as she was three-of-five with two runs scored, the two homers and a career-high five RBI. In addition, senior All-OAC outfielder-turned-second baseman Casey Ward (Amherst/ Steele) and Loudin each had a pair of hits.
