BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College softball team lost both games this morning (Mar. 7) at the annual Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Yelllow Jackets were defeated by Widener (Pa.) University, 5-2, in nine innings and also lost to Coe (Iowa) College, 8-0, in five innings.
With the losses, B-W falls to 1-3 on the season.
In the opening game against Widener, neither team managed to score in regulation and needed extra innings to decide the outcome. Both teams would score a run in the eighth inning tying the game at 1-1. In the top of the ninth, Widener took a commanding lead scoring four runs to take a 5-1 advantage. Senior first baseman Beth Rubosky (Roaming Shores/ Grand Valley) hit a RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 5-2, but B-W could not score any more runs as Widener went on to win by the score of 5-2.
Senior pitcher K.C. Young (Olmsted Twp./ Olmsted Falls) pitched all nine innings and fell to 0-2 on the season despite striking out eight batters.
In the second game, Coe came out scoring taking a 2-0 lead after the first inning of play. B-W held Coe to a scoreless second inning, but the Kohawks scored a combined six runs in the next three innings en route to the 8-0 victory in five innings of play. The Yellow Jackets managed just three hits with a trio of singles from Rubosky, junior outfielder Casey Ward (Amherst/ Steele) and junior outfielder Ellen Wolke (Middletown/ Fenwick).
Senior pitcher Jeanette Brezina (Parma Heights/ Valley Forge) fell to 1-1 on the season allowing 10 hits, five earned runs and struck out three batters.
The Yellow Jackets will be action again tomorrow, Tuesday, Mar. 8, with a doubleheader beginning with College (Pa.) Misericordia at 4:10 followed by St. Francis (Ill.) University in the nightcap at 6:00.
