BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team lost a nonleague doubleheader today (Monday, April 11, 2005) to Notre Dame College of Ohio, 4-3 and 5-3. With the two losses, B-W is now 11-11 overall.
In the first game, B-W scored single runs in the first, third and top of the seventh innings and led 3-0 entering the bottom of the last frame, but NDCO scored four times off of senior Jeanette Brezina (Parma/ Valley Forge) to earn the win. Brezina pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowed six hits and struck out six but fell to 6-5 overall. Offensively, senior designated hitter K.C. Young (Olmsted Falls) led the offense with three hits in four at-bats and had a pair of runs batted-in. Senior outfielder Scarlett Gemm (Perrysburg/ Toledo Notre Dame) had B-W's only extra base hit, a double.
In the nightcap, B-W again opened an early 2-0 lead in the first, but NDCO scored twice in the bottom of the frame and added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to offset another B-W tally in the fifth en route to the sweep of the Yellow Jackets. On the mound, Young was tagged with the loss and fell to 5-6 overall. She allowed 10 hits and three earned runs and struck out seven batters and did not allow a walk. At the plate, Brezina was three-of-four with a run scored and an RBI.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, April 13 when they host Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in a key OAC doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field. In addition, on Saturday, April 16, B-W will host OAC arch-rival Mount Union College in an OAC twinbill in Berea at 1:00 p.m.
