The Yellow Jacket Softball Team Loses a Doubleheader at Mt. St. Joseph, 3-2 and

6-5, in Cincinnati

BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team lost a nonleague doubleheader today (Sunday, March 20) at the College of Mt. St. Joseph, 3-2 and 6-5, in Cincinnati, Ohio. With the two losses, B-W is now 5-7 overall and will not play again until March 29 when it travels to Delaware, Ohio to play a doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan University.

In the first game, MSJ scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie. The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. After there were two outs, senior pitcher K.C. Young (Olmsted Falls) drew a walk and moved to second via a wild pitch. She then scored when junior All-American catcher Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic) singled. On the hit, Young moved to third and she then scored when the throw from the outfield eluded the MSJ catcher. MSJ then took the lead as it scored once in each the second and third innings. B-W then tied the game in the top of the fifth when senior second baseman Amy Gladieux (Northwood) doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by junior pinch hitter Ellen Wolke (Middletown/ Bishop Fenwick). For the game, MSJ outhit B-W, 8-5.

At the plate, five Yellow Jackets each had one base hit, including the double by Gladieux. On the mound, Young was saddled with the loss to drop to 2-4 overall. She allowed all eight hits and three earned runs, struck out four and walked one.

In the nightcap, MSJ again tallied the winning runs in the bottom of the seventh to win, 6-5. After B-W had scored three runs in the top of the inning to take a 5-3 advantage, MSJ scored three times in the bottom of the inning without making an out to pull off the sweep.

After MSJ took a 1-0 lead after one innig, B-W scored twice in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. In the top of the fourth, Loudin reached base as she was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior pitcher Jeanette Brezina (Parma/ Valley Forge). Loudin then scored on a double by senior first baseman Beth Rubosky (Roaming Shores/ Grand Valley). Rubosky then advanced to third base via a wild pitch and scored on a hit by sophomore 3B Lauren Helowicz (Williamsville, N.Y./ Clarence).

MSJ then tied the score at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth anmd that set the stage for the fateful seventh inning.

In the B-W top of the seventh, Wolke led off the inning with a single and advanced to second via a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore catcher Molly Sersig (West Salem/ Northwestern) pinch hit and walked to put Yellow Jacket runners at first and second bases. Following a fly out for the second out of the inning, Loudin hit her third homerun of 2005 and her school career-record 24th to give B-W a 5-3 lead.

At the plate in game two, six different B-W players each had hits, including doubles by Young and Rubosky and the homer by Loudin. MSJ again outhit B-W, 11-6. On the mound, Brezina was given the loss to even her season mark at 3-3. She allowed 11 hits, six runs (five earned), struck out five and walked a pair.
