Nine Innings and 4-1, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Saturday, April 16, 2005) with OAC-rival and 15th-ranked Mount Union College at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea, Ohio. Mt. Union won the first game, 4-2 in nine innings, and also captured the nightcap, 4-1.

With the two losses, B-W is now 12-14 overall and 5-5 in the OAC. With its two wins, Mt. Union is now 23-6 overall and 11-3 in the OAC.

In the opener, Mt. Union broke open a 2-2 tie in the ninth inning with back-to-back homeruns. The Purple Raiders scored a run in the top of the second to lead 1-0 and B-W scored in its half of the inning to tie it at 1-1. Then Mt. Union scored again in the top of the fifth to lead 2-1 and B-W again tied it at 2-2 in the sixth. That set up the ninth inning heroics for Mt. Union.

Despite the loss, B-W had eight base hits, including two each by senior pitcher K.C. Young (Olmsted Falls) and senior second baseman Amy Gladieux (Northwood) as well as the fifth homer of the year by junior two-time All-American catcher Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic) in the sixth. Young suffered the loss on the mound and fell to 6-7 overall.

In the nightcap, Mt. Union scored twice in the first before B-W tallied a run in the fourth and trailed 2-1. The Purple Raiders then scored single runs in each the fifth and sixth innings to earn the sweep.

Despite the loss, Loudin led the offense with a pair of hits and drove in B-W's lone run. On the mound, senior Jeanette Brezina (Parma Valley Forge) suffered the loss to also fall to 6-7 overall.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Tuesday, April 19 when they travel to Columbus to play OAC-rival Capital University for an OAC twinbill at 3:30 p.m.
