College, Losing 1-0 and Then Winning 2-1
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Friday, April 29) with OAC rival Marietta College at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea. The Pioneers won the first game, 1-0, and the Yellow Jackets captured the nightcap, 2-1.
With its split, B-W is now 14-18 overall and 7-9 in the OAC. With its split, Marietta is now 15-20 overall and 9-7 in the OAC.
In the opener, the Yellow Jackets managed just two hits aganst Marietta starter Kristen Quintana and were outhit, 5-2. The Pioneers scored the game's lone run in the top of the fourth inning when they had three of their five total hits. Despite the loss, B-W senior starting pitcher Jeanette Brezina (Parma/ Valley Forge) matched Quintana pitch-for-pitch but fell to 7-9 overall. At the plate, Brezina had a first inning single and junior third baseman Vicki Munnings (Stow/ Monroe Falls) a second inning double for the two Yellow Jacket safeties.
In the nightcap, B-W scored a pair of first inning runs and then held off a late Pioneer seventh inning rally to capture the victory and help senior starting pitcher K.C. Young (Olmsted Falls) improve to 7-9 overall. Young allowed the Pioneers to score their only run in the seventh and left the tying run at second base to end the game.
In pitching her 16th complete game of the season, Young allowed just four hits, one run (unearned), struck out four Marietta batters and walked just one.
In the Yellow Jacket first inning, junior shortstop Casey Ward (Amherst/ Steele) led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After the second out, junior two-time All-American catcher Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic) singled home Ward with the first run. After Loudin advanced to second via a wild pitch, Brezina singled her home with what was the game-winning run. In the nightcap, Munnings led the offense with a pair of base hits, including a double.
The Yellow Jackets return to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 30 when they host OAC-rival Wilmington College in an OAC twinbill in the regular-season home finale at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field at 1:00 p.m. B-W also is scheduled to play a nonleague doubleheader on Monday, May 2 at Allegheny (Pa.) College at 3:30 p.m.
