The Yellow Jacket Softball Team Beats Kenyon, 5-1, to Even its Record at 5-5

Overall, Second Game is Rained Out

BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team travelled to Gambier, Ohio today (Saturday, March 19, 2005) and defeated host Kenyon College, 5-1, in a game that was originally scheduled as a doubleheader in Berea, Ohio.

Due to inclement weather, B-W and Kenyon decided to switch the game to Gambier. The Yellow Jackets won the first game to even its record at 5-5 overall but the second game was called due to inclement weather and B-W leading 2-1 after two innings.

In the game that counted, B-W broke open a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh inning by scoring four runs on three hits to earn the win. B-W took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the second and Kenyon tied the score with a run in the bottom of the sixth before the winning rally in the seventh.

In the second, senior starting pitcher Jeanette Brezina (Parma Valley Forge) led offf the inning by reaching on an error and then later scored on a ground out. In the seventh, Brezina began the winning rally by helping her own cause by rapping a double. She then moved to third on a ground out and scored the game-winning run on a single by senior second baseman Amy Gladieux (Northwood). After two B-W hitters reached base via errors, senior centerfielder Casey Ward (Amherst/ Steele) scored both with a triple. Ward then scored the final run via a wild pitch. Brezina and Ward paced the six-hit Yellow Jacket attack as each had a pair.

On the mound, Brezina improved her record to 3-2 overall as she allowed just five hits and one earned run and had her fifth complete game of 2005. She also struck out three batters and walked two.

The Yellow Jackets hope to get back to action tomorrow (Sunday, March 20) when they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to play The College of Mt. St, Joseph in a nonleague doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. B-W is then off until March 29 when it travels to Ohio Wesleyan University.
