The Yellow Jacket Softball Team Sweeps Heidelberg, 13-0 and 2-1,

at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team swept Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College, 13-0 and 2-1, today (Tuesday, April 5, 2005) at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea.

With the wins, the Yellow Jackets are now 7-7 overall and 2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Heidelberg falls to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.

In the first game, B-W pounded out 13 hits and scored runs in every inning en route to the rout. Leading the way on offense was junior center fielder Casey Ward (Amherst/ Steele) who was four-of-four at the plate, including a double and a three-run homerun in the third inning, and five runs batted-in. In addition, senior first baseman Beth Rubosky (Roaming Shores/ Grand Valley) was three-of-three with an RBI. On the mound, senior Jeanette Brezina (Parma/ Valley Forge) earned the victory going all five innings and allowing three hits to improve to 4-3 overall. She also struck out two batters and walked one.

In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets trailed 1-0 until the tying the game in the fourth inning and scoring the winning run in the fifth. In the fourth, senior pitcher K.C. Young (Olmsted Falls) doubled to lead off the inning, was sacrifice bunted to third and scored the tying run on a sacrifice flyout by Brezina. In the fifth, junior shortstop Vicki Munnings (Stow/ Munroe Falls) doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a fielders choice grounder to short. The shortstop threw home, but Munnings beat the throw and scored the winning run.

Offensively,Young led the way with two doubles and the game-tying run scored. On the mound, Young improved to 3-4 overall as she allowed six hits and one earned run. She struck out seven and walked two.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow (April 6) when they travel to New Concord to play OAC-rival and nationally-ranked Muskingum College in an OAC doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. B-W next plays at home on Thursday (April 7) when it hosts nonleague and Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University in a twinbill at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field at 3:30 p.m.
