BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split a pair of games to begin the 2004 season. The Yellow Jackets lost their first game to Simpson (Iowa) College, 6-0, but defeated Ohio Wesleyan University, 2-1, in game two at the Osceola County Softball Complex in Kissimee, Florida.

In the first game, B-W could not overcome a strong peformance at the plate by Simpson. The Yellow Jackets managed just two hits compared to Simpson's eight. The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when the Storm would score two runs. The Yellow Jackets could not answer and Simpson would pad its lead with two more runs taking a 4-0 advantage heading into the last inning. Simpson put the game away scoring two more runs in the top of the six and were able to hold B-W to a 6-0 shutout.
Junior hurler K.C. Young (Olmsted Twp/ Olmsted Falls) is now 0-1 on the year and pitched all seven innings for B-W giving up six runs and eight hits against Simpson.
In game two against Ohio Wesleyan, B-W found themselves in a pitching dual until the sixth inning. Ohio Wesleyan's Kasey Keimig scored from third base on a single from Linsey Longstreth giving the Bishop's a 1-0 lead heading into the final inning. The Yellow Jackets would rally with three of their five hits coming during their last at bat. Freshman Lori Schmidt (Brunswick) started things off with a single. She would then advance on a K.C. Ward (Amherst/ Steele) out, before scoring on a K.C. Young single tying the game at 1-1. Young would advance to third on a couple of Ohio Wesleyan errors before junior Amy Gladieux (Northwood) hit a single allowing Young to score from third taking a 2-1 lead. B-W won the game on three solid defensive plays by Ward ending a last inning come from behind victory.
Yellow Jacket pitcher Jeanette Brezina (Parma Heights/ Valley Forge) went the distance allowing just one earned run and is now 1-0 on the year.
B-W will continue play on Monday, Mar. 8 with a pair of games against Coe College and McKendree College. The first game begins at 2:20 p.m. at the Osceola County Softball Complex in Kissimee, Florida.
