Yellow Jackets Sweep a Pair of Games; B-W Wins Third Straight

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team swept a pair of a games and have now won three straight.  The Yellow Jackets defeated Penn State-Behrend (Pa.), 4-0, and Illinois College, 9-2, on Tuesday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimee, Florida.

With the wins, B-W is now 4-2 on the season.

Against Penn State-Behrend, B-W scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning off of a double by junior K.C. Young (Olmsted Twp./ Olmsted Falls) allowing teammate Mary Farrell (Middleburg Heights/ Holy Name) score from third.  The Yellow Jackets would add a run in each of the next three innings including a solo home run by sophomore Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic), her first of the season, in the top of the fourth en route to the 4-0 shutout.

Solid defense and good pitching from Young, who is now 1-1 on the season, kept PSU-Behrend from scoring.  Young pitched all seven innings allowing no runs and striking out two batters.

In the second game against Illinois College, B-W had its best offensive game so far this season recording 13 total hits and scoring a season-high nine runs.  The Yellow Jackets started things off with a three-run first inning highlighted by a RBI double by junior Amy Gladieux (Northwood).  PSU-Behrend would make things interesting, however, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning cutting the B-W lead to 3-2.  The Yellow Jackets responded back scoring six runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 9-2 lead.  Senior pitcher Liz Fries (Columbus/ Bishop Watterson) would strike out the first batter to lead off the seventh inning and strong defense would get the next two outs as the Yellow Jackets would go on to win 9-2 for their third straight win.

Fries pitched all seven innings allowing two runs including five strikeouts.  She improves her individual record to 1-1 on the season.

B-W will play two more games on Thursday, Mar. 10 beginning with Kean University at 8:50 a.m. followed by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at 10:40 a.m. at the Osceola County Softball Complex in Kissimmee, Florida.
