The B-W Softball Team Splits a Pair of Games, 4-3 and 2-1, With Nonleague Foe Ohio Wesleyan in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split a pair of games today (Sunday, April 18) with nonleague and traditional rival opponent Ohio Wesleyan University at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Softball Field in Berea. B-W lost the first game, 4-3, and then won the nightcap, 2-1.

With the split, B-W is now 14-12 overall. OWU is 19-11 overall.

In the first game, the Yellow Jackets and Battling Bishops were tied at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore shortstop Casey Ward (Amherst/ Steele) had a two-run single and gave B-W a 3-1 advantage. OWU would then add a run of its own in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 3-2 heading into the final inning. In the top of the seventh, the Battling Bishops scored twice to win the game.

Senior pitcher Jeanette Brezina (Parma/ Valley Forge) took the loss on the mound and fell to 5-3 overall. Offensively, Ward and sophomore All-American cather Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic) each had two base hits.

In the nightcap, B-W would manage just three base hits but were able to score two runs in the first inning on a two-run single by junior second baseman Amy Gladieux (Northwood) with bases loaded, and that was enough to win the game. On the mound, senior two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference pitcher Liz Fries (Columbus/ Bishop Watterson) limited OWU to just a run in the second inning to improve to 6-2 overall. Fries struck out five Bishops and walked just one.

B-W will next play on Tuesday, Apri 20 when they travel to Tiffin for an OAC matchup against Heidelberg College at 3:30 p.m. In addition this week, B-W is home for doubleheaders with nonleague foe Ursuline College on Thursday, April 22 at 3:30 p.m., versus OAC rival Capital University on Saturday, April 24 at 1:00 p.m. and against nonleague and Cleveland rival Notre Dame College of Ohio on Sunday, April 25 at 2:00 p.m.
