Tournament by Ohio Northern (May 1)
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team was eliminated from the 2004 the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament today by Ohio Northern University, 9-1, in a loser's bracket game. The Yellow Jackets end their season with a 21-15 record.
The Polar Bears scored four times in the top of the second inning to break open a 0-0 tie and then added two more runs in the top of the third frame to lead 6-0. B-W scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning when freshman third baseman Lauren Helowicz (Williamsville, N.Y./ Clarence) singled, advanced to second on an error, to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. ONU then added three insurance runs in the top of the fifth to "ice" the game and advance to play Mt. Union College in the loser's bracket final. The winner will play host Muskingum College in the championship round.
Offensively, B-W had just three base hits in the game. Helowicz, sophomore All-American catcher Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic) and junior center fielder Jackie White (Cleveland/ Parma Heights Holy Name) had the three safeties. On the mound, junior K.C. Young (Olmsted Falls) suffered the loss and fell to 5-9 overall.
