Union in Alliance, Winning 14-4 (5) and 8-6
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Wednesday, April 7) with rival Mount Union College in Alliance at the 23rd Street Field. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 14-4, in five innings and won the nightcap, 8-6, highlighted by a five-run first inning.
B-W has now won five of its last six OAC games and is 11-7 overall and 5-3 in the OAC. MUC falls to 10-11 overall and 2-4 in the OAC.
In the first game, senior Liz Fries (Columbus/ Bishop Watterson) earned her fourth win of the season against just one loss by throwing a complete-game allowing just three hits. Fries also struck out one batter and had no walks.
B-W trailed, 1-0, after the first inning and took the lead in the third scoring three runs. The Yellow Jackets would score 11 more runs in the next three innings including a grand slam by sophmore Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic),her sixth homerun of the season,in the fifth inning.
Offensively, Loudin led the way going four-for-four from the plate. Lori Schmidt (Brunswick) had three hits. Freshman Lauren Helowicz (Williamsville, N.Y./ Clarence), junior Amy Gladieux (Northwood), junior K.C. Young (Olmsted Twp./ Olmsted Falls) and sophomore Casey Ward (Amherst/ Steele) each had two.
In the nightcap, B-W jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the first inning. MUC would score a run in the top of the second inning cutting the Yellow Jacket lead to 5-1. B-W would then add three runs later in the game en route to the 8-6 victory. Loudin and Schmidt would lead the way with two hits each offensively.
Senior pitcher Jeanette Brezina (Parma Heights/ Valley Forge) improved to 5-1 for the season on the mound giving up six runs and eleven hits and three strike outs.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday. April 9, 2004 when they travel to Marietta to play OAC rival Marietta College in a twinbill at 3:30 p.m.
