Yellow Jackets have won Seven of Last Eight
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team Swept a pair of games in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Friday, April 9) at OAC-rival Marietta College in Marietta. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 5-0, and the nightcap,3-1 and have won seven of their last eight games.
With the pair of wins, B-W is now 13-7 overall and 5-5 in the OAC. The Pioneers drop to 14-13 overall and 7-3 in the OAC
In the first game, B-W jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a two-run homerun by sophomore Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic). Loudin's homerun was her seventh of the season and her fourth in the last five games. The Yellow Jackets added two more runs off of a squeeze bunt by sophomore shortstop Casey Ward (Amherst/ Steele) and a RBI single by junior K.C. Young (Olmsted Twp./ Olmsted Falls) to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Young then tripled in the top of the fifth and scored the final run of the game on a fielding error by Marietta's second baseman for the 5-0 victory.
Offensively, B-W had 11 total hits led by Young, Loudin, sophomore Lindsay Kaya (Oberlin/ Firelands) and freshman Lori Schmidt (Brunswick) who all had two hits each.
Young got her third win of the season on the mound and her first shutout pitching all seven innings allowing just three hits and struck out four batters.
In the nightcap, both teams would score a run in the first inning tying the game at 1-1 until the bottom of the fourth when Loudin scored from second base on a throwing error giving B-W a slim 2-1 advantage. Lindsay Kaya secured the win for the Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the sixth with a single to left field allowing Loudin to score her second run of the game en route to the 3-1 win.
Loudin went two-for-two at the plate, including a triple, to lead all hitters. Casey Ward, Kaya and junior Samantha Gougler (Garfield Heights) each had one hit.
Senior pitcher, Liz Fries (Columbus/ Bishop Watterson) improved to 5-1 on the season going the distance on the mound allowing just the one run and six hits and striking out five batters.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, April 14 when they host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University in an OAC doubleheader at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field at 3:30 p.m. Also next week, B-W will travel to New Concord to play nationally-ranked Muskingum College in an OAC twinbill on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and then host a rescheduled twinbill on Sunday against Ohio Wesleyan University at 1:00 p.m.
