Yellow Jacket four-game winning streak snapped by U.S. Coast Guard (Conn.)

Academy; BW defeats Kean (N.J.) University

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University softball team had a four-game winning streak snapped by a 2-1 loss to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in eight innings in the second of two games played on Wednesday.  The Yellow Jackets defeated Kean (N.J.) University, 4-1, in the first game at the Osceola County Softball Complex  in Kissimee, Florida.

With the split, BW is now 5-3 on the season heading into the final day of games tomorrow.

In the first game against Kean University, the game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when the Yellow Jackets scored two runs taking a 2-0 lead.  BW padded its lead in the top of the seventh inning adding two more runs courtesy of a couple of errors by Kean allowing sophomore catcher Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic) to score on an errant throw and sophomore Lindsay Kaya (Oberlin/ Firelands) scored from third on a wild pitch.  The lone run for Kean came off the bat of Michelle Baiera also in the seventh inning.  The Cougars would fail to score anymore runs as the Yellow Jackets went on to the 4-1 victory.

Junior pitcher Jeanette Brezina (Parma Heights/ Valley Forge) went the distance for BW allowing just the lone run and five hits including three strikeouts.  She improves to a perfect 3-0 on the season following the win against Kean.

In the second game, BW would manage only three hits for the game compared to 11 hits in the previous game.  U.S. Coast Guard Academy's Stephanie Adams hit a solo homerun in the top of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead over BW.  The Yellow Jackets would later tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Nicole Loudin hit her second homerun of the season and her second in consecutive days, tying the game at 1-1.  Neither team would be able to score again in regulation sending the game into extra innings.  CGA would capitalize in the eighth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Kimmel allowing teammate Jen Paulson to score from third taking a 2-1 lead.  In the bottom half of the eighth, BW hit into three consecutive outs including a diving catch in foul territory by the CGA catcher to end the game and get the 2-1 victory.

With the loss, junior pitcher K.C. Young (Olmsted Twp./ Olmsted Falls) falls to 1-2 on the season.  She pitched all eight innings allowing two total runs, one earned run and five hits despite 10 strikeouts.

BW will conclude its southern trip with a pair of games against Misericordia (Pa.) College and the College of New Jersey on Thursday, Mar. 11.  The first game begins at 12:30 p.m. at the Osceola County Softball Complex in Kissimee, Florida.
