BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team was defeated by Coe (Iowa) College, 5-1, in the first game of a doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets then went on to defeat McKendree (Ill.) College, 7-6, in eight innings on Monday in Orlando, Florida.
B-W now is 2-2 on the season following the two games on Monday.
In the early game, Coe College jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a three-run homerun by Chris Engel. Coe would add a run in both the second and fourth innings to take a commanding 5-0 lead heading into the final inning. Gladieux would prevent the shutout by scoring from third base off of a Jeanette Brezina (Parma Heights/ Valley Forge) single. B-W would not manage to score anymore runs as Coe went on to win, 5-1.
Senior pitcher Liz Fries (Columbus/ Bishop Watterson) went the distance on the mound giving up five total runs, three of which were earned runs and a strikeout. She is now 0-1 following the loss to Coe College.
In the nightcap, McKendree would score first off of a Becky Schreiber RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. B-W would answer back scoring two runs in the same inning highlighted by a K.C. Young (Olmsted Twp./ Olmsted Falls) double allowing teammate K.C. Ward (Amherst/ Steele) to score from first. McKendree would add another run in the fifth tying the game at 2-2 temporarily. The tie wouldn't last as the Yellow Jackets put three runs on the board to take a 5-2 lead. The Bearcats cut the lead to two in the sixth inning on a Jodi Pfefferkorn RBI single. McKendree would then score two runs in the top of the seventh tying the game at 5-5. B-W would fail to score any runs and would need extra innings to decide the outcome.
McKendree scored one run in the eighth inning to take a 6-5 lead. The Yellow Jackets scored the tying run with the bases loaded thanks to a Lori Schmidt (Brunswick) single allowing sophomore Bonnie Rice (Glenmont/ Danville) to score from third. K.C. Ward would load the bases again on a fielder's choice before an error by the McKendree right fielder allowed pinch runner Scarlett Gemm (Perrysburg/ Notre Dame) score from third for the 7-6 win.
Junior Jeanette Brezina got the win and improves to 2-0 on the season.
B-W will continue its spring trip south with a pair of games against Penn State (Pa.) Behrend and Illinois College. The first game starts at 2:20 p.m. at the Osceola Softball Complex in Orlando, Florida.
