BW Softball Team Sweeps CWRU in Cleveland, 7-4 and 5-3
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University today, 7-4 and 5-3, at CWRU in University Circle. The two victories ran BW's winning ways to four straight and improved its record to 19-10 overall.
In the opener, the Yellow Jackets built a 5-0 lead before CWRU scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to close to within 5-4. BW put the game away with a pair of runs in the sixth to win 7-4. On the mound, junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference hurler Liz Fries (Columbus Bishop Watterson) earned the win on the mound to improve to 4-4 overall and senior All-OAc and Central Region shortstop/ pitcher Evie Evans (Painesville Harvey) threw the final two and two-thirds innings to earn her first career save. At the plate, freshman catcher Nicole Loudin (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic) led the way with three hits in four at-bats, including a double and three runs batted-in. The three RBI gave Loudin 40 for the season and established a BW single-season record. In addition, senior two-time All-Central Region first baseman Amanda Opperman (North Royalton) had two hits, including a double.
In the nightcap, BW tallied five runs in the top of the sixth inning and held off CWRU to win, 5-3. On the mound, sophomore 2B/ P Jeanette Brezina (Parma Valley Forge) earned her fifth win in eight decisions this spring as she tossed a complete-game seven-hitter. At the plate. Loudin had two more hits, Brezina helped herself with a pair and Opperman added another double. Opperman's hit also was the 196th of her career. She is now four hits shy of becoming the first baseball or softball player in BW history to have 200 career hits.
The Yellow Jackets, 9-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, will be back in action tomorrow, Friday, April 18, when they host first place and sixth-ranked Muskingum College in an OAC doubleheader at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field at 1:00 p.m. Muskingum will enter the twinbill at 28-3 overall and a perfect 12-0 in the OAC.
