BW Ends Season With Doubleheader Loss to Marietta

MARIETTA, OHIO --  The Baldwin Wallace University softball team lost its final Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Sunday, April 29, 2012) to Marietta College. The Pioneers won the first game, 1-0, and captured the nightcap, 9-1.

With its losses, BW ends its season at 18-20 overall and 6-12 in the OAC. The Pioneers are 20-18 overall and 8-10 in the OAC.

In the first game, BW outhit Marietta, 9-2, but the Pioneers scored the lone run of the game with their only two hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim the victory. The Marietta leadoff hitter singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on the second and last Pioneer hit off of Yellow Jacket starter Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/ Field).

At the plate, BW was led by freshman shortstop Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge) and junior rightfielder Alyssa Brown (Hudson) as each had a pair of hits. Both Murray and senior leftfielder Sarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) each had doubles. On the mound, Murray pitched all seven innings, allowed two hits, one run (earned), struck out eight Pioneer batters and walked three to fall to 7-8 this season.

In the second game, Marietta jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning, broke the game open with five in the third and another in the fourth for a 7-0 advantage. BW closed to 7-1 with a run in the fifth when sophomore centerfielder Nikki Peskura (Strongsville) singled, moved to second base on a single by sophomore first baseman Kaity Mullen (Avon Lake), to third base via a single by senior second baseman Katie Finley (Vermilion) and scored on a ground out.

At the plate, five Yellow Jackets each had a single. On the mound,
sophomore Justine Wise (New London) started and pitched the first two and two-third innings and suffered the loss to fall to 4-8 overall.  Murray threw the final two and two-third innings.
