Baldwin-Wallace Softball Splits Nonconference Doubleheader with Wittenberg in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split a nonconference doubleheader with Wittenberg University today (Friday, March 21, 2008) in Springfield.  The Yellow Jackets fell, 8-2, in the first game, but came back and defeated the Tigers 11-2 in five innings in the second game.

With the split, the Yellow Jackets are 6-6 overall and the Tigers are 6-6 overall.

In the  first game of the doubleheader, Wittenberg scored four runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth, while B-W scored one in the fifth and one in the seventh.  Junior catcher Shea Monschein (Wellington) led the Jackets at the plate, going two-for-three with homerun and two runs scored.  In addition, Freshman shortstop Katrina Resek (Strongsvile) was two-for-four with a run batted-in.

Freshman Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/Senior) started on the mound and pitched four and two-thirds inning and gave up eight hits while striking out one to take the loss.  Junior Jessica Shaffer (Brooksfield) pitched one and one-third innings of relief and gave up one hit and struck out two.

In the second game B-W jumped out early, as it scored nine runs on eight hits in the bottom of the first inning.  The highlight of the inning was a grand slam homerun by junior first baseman Caitlin Myor (Sheffield Lake/Elyria Senior).  B-W would add a run in the second inning and then another in the third.  Wittenberg only plated two runs and that was in the third inning.  At the plate B-W was led by, Resek who was three-for-three with two double and a RBI, Myor was two-for-two with the grand slam a double and five RBIs and sophomore third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/Keystone) who was three-for-four.

Junior Katy Munshower (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highland) earned the win on the mound as she pitched three innings, giving up four hits while striking out one.  Freshman Samantha Swineford (Nova/Mapleton) pitched two innings of relief and gave up four hits and struck out two. 

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, March 26 when the have a make-up doubleheader at Ursuline College.  The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4:00 p.m..
