Baldwin-Wallace Softball Team Sweeps Doubleheader With Kenyon in Gambier

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team swept Kenyon College today (Wednesday, March 26, 2008) in a nonconference doubleheader played at the Kenyon College Softball Complex in Gambier.  The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 8-6, and won the nightcap, 6-5.

With the sweep,  B-W improves to 8-6 overall and Kenyon falls to 4-8 overall.

In the first game, Kenyon got on the board first as it scored two runs in the first inning, then B-W scored one in the top of the second to cut the lead to 2-1, then Kenyon scored one in the bottom of the third, three more in three more times in the fourth, before B-W came back and scoredfive in the fifth and two more in the top of the seventh to win 8-6.

At the plate, B-W was led by freshman catcher Tanya Davis (Hinckley/Medina Highland) and sophomore third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/Keystone) who both went two-for-four with three runs batted in.  In addition, junior pitcher Katy Munshower (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands) went two-for-three with a RBI and her first homerun of the season and freshman shortstop Katrina Resek (Strongsville) who went two-for-four with a RBI..

Munshower started on the mound and pitched five innings and gave up six runs (four earned) on 10 hits, while striking out one Kenyon batter and walking another batter.  Freshman Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/Senior) came on in relief pitched two innings and gave up no runs, hits and walked none to earn the win to improve her record to 2-5.

In the second game, B-W scored twice in the first, once in the second and three times in the third to build a 6-0 lead.  Kenyon tried to rally as it scored once in the fifth and four times in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as B-W held on to win 6-5.

At the plate, B-W was led by Davis who went two-for-four again with two RBI and Resek who again was two-for-four with a RBI.  In addition, sophomore centerfielder Jessica Esch (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) went two-for-three and junior first baseman Caitlin Myor (Sheffield Lake/Elyria Senior) went one-for-three with two RBI and Ohio Athletic Conference-leading fourth homerun. 

On the mound, freshman Samantha Swineford (Nova/Mapleton) earned the win to improve her record to 2-1 as she pitched six and one-third innings as she gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits while walking three Kenyon batters.  Rohrbacher came on in relief and pitched two-thirds of an inning in the seventh to pick up her second save of the season.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, March 29 when they open OAC play with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Mount Union College in Alliance.  Then, B-W travels to Wooster on Sunday, March 30 for a nonconference doubleheader with The College of Wooster at 1:00 p.m.
