Baldwin Wallace Falls Twice to Marietta in Doubleheader in Berea
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin Wallace University softball team lost a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games today (Saturday, April 12, 2008) to Marietta College at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea. The Pioneers won game one, 9-6, and nightcap, 9-6 in eight innings..
The two losses give the Yellow Jackets a 12-16 overall and 2-6 OAC record. Marietta improved to 14-10 overall and 4-6 in the OAC.
In the first game, Marietta led, 4-1, heading into the bottom of the sixth inning and then BW scored four runs to take a 5-4 lead then Marietta answered with five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-5 lead and BW only plated one run in the bottom of the final inning and Marietta won, 9-6.
Despite the loss, the BW offense was led by junior pitcher Katey Munshower (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands) who was three-for-four with a run scored. In addition sophomore third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/Keystone) was two-for-four with a homerun, two runs scored and a run-batted-in, sophomore Jessica Esch (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) was two-for-three witha double, two RBI and a run scored, freshman shortstop Katrina Resek (Strongsville) was two for-three with a RBI and junior left fielder Rachel Krause (Parma/Valley Forge) was two-for-four.
On the mound, Munshower took the loss and dropped her season recored to 6-3 as she gave up nine runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out three batters and walking three.
In the second game, BW led, 6-4 heading into the seventh inning and then Marietta scored two runs in to tie the score and the game went into extra innings where the Pioneers scored three times in the top of the eighth inning and BW couldn't answer in the bottom half of the inning.
Junior catcher Shea Monschein (Wellington) led the Jackets at the plate going two-for-four with two RBI and a run scored. In addtion, Resek was three-for-four with a runs scored, junior first baseman Caitlin Myor (Sheffield Lake/Elyria Senior) was two-for-four with a RBI and Krause was two-for-three with two RBI.
On the mound, freshman Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/Senior) started and pitched seven innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits, while walking two batters. Freshman Samantha Swineford (Nova/Mapleton) came on in relief in the seventh inning and took the loss as she gave up three runs on four hits while striking out two and walking two. Swineford's record falls to, 2-4.
The Yellow Jacket's doubleheader tomorrow (April 13) at Case Western Reserve has been postponed with no make-up date announced. Because of the postponed doubleheader the Yellow Jackets won't return to action until Tuesday, April 15 when they travel to Westerville, Ohio for an OAC doubleheader with Otterbein College at 3:30 p.m.
