The Baldwin Wallace University Softball Sweeps Wilmington, 7-4 and 10-7, in Wilmington
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Wilmington College, today (Saturday, April 28, 2007) in Wilmington. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 7-4, and then captured the nightcap, 10-7.
With its sweep, the Yellow Jackets move to 10-20 overal and 4-12 in the OAC and end their season with an OAC twinbill tomorrow, Sunday, April 29 at Ohio Northern University in Ada at 2:00 p.m. With its losses, Wilmington is now 4-35 overall and 0-18 in the OAC.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 5-0 lead with five runs in the top of the second inning. Thed Quakers cut the lead to 5-3 with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, but BW came back to score two more in the sixth to gain a 7-4 advantage. Wilmington scored once in the bottom of the sixth but could get no closer as BW won the opener.
Offensively, BW had seven base hits, including two by freshman centerfielder Jessica Esch (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington). In addition, sophomore Rachel Krause (Parma/ Valley Forge) had a three-run triple to highlight the five-run second inning, sophomore Caitlin Myor (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Senior) had a pair of runs batted-in and freshman shortstop Lauren Sabolik (Strongsville) scored a pair of runs.
On the mound, sophomore Jessica Shaffer (Brookfield) earned the win to improve to 3-9 overall. She tossed the first five and two-third innings and allowed six hits, four runs (al earned) and struck out two Quaker batters. She was relieved by freshman Danielle Litton (Lodi/ Cloverleaf) pitched the final one and one-third innings and did not allow a runner and struck out two to earn her first career save.
In the nightcap, after Wilmington scored six runs in the first frame for a 6-0 lead, BW began its comeback. The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the top of the third, one in the fourth and took the lead, 7-6, with three in the fifth. After the Quakers tied it at 7-7 with a run in the fifth, BW gained the win and sweep with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Offensively, Myor led the way with a pair of hits, including her second homerun of the season to go with two runs scored and five RBI. Krause had one base hit, scored three runs and had an RBI.
On the mound, sophomore Katey Munshower (Natrona Heights, Pa./ Highland) pitched a seven-inning complete-game to improve her record to 5-9 overall. She allowed nine hits, seven runs (six earned) and struck out a pair of opposing hitters.
