BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team splt a pair of games today (Tuesday, March 6) on its annual spring break trip to the annual Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida.
The Yellow Jackets, 4-2 overall, defeated Emerson (Mass.) College, 4-3, this morning in a replacement game for a game against Bluffton College that was cancelled and then lost to the University of St. Francis (Ill.), 5-2, this afternoon.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and increased it with two runs in the third and another in the fourth for a 4-0 advantage. Emerson scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to close to within 4-3 but could get no closer.
On the mound, sophomore Katey Munshower (Natrona heights, Pa./ Highlands) earned her second victory of the trip as she tossed a complete-game seven-hitter, allowed three earned runs, struck out two Emerson hitters and allowed a pair of bases on balls. Munshower is now 2-0 overall.
Offensively, B-W had seven hits with freshman designater player Lauren Hoffer (Crestline) leading the way with two hits in three at-bats, including a first inning homerun, two runs scored and a stolen base. Senior All-OAC catcher Molly Sersig (West Salem/ Northwestern) had a two-run double in the third inning and junior centerfielder Carrie Hoffer (Galion) had a run-scoring double in the fourth that turned out to be the game-winner.
In the nightcap, St. Francis earned a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the second inning and increased its lead to 2-0 with a run in the sixth before the Yellow Jackets tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth frame. St. Francis then won the game with a three-run seventh.
On the mound, sophomore Jessica Shaffer (Brookfield) took the loss and dropped her record to 1-1 as she pitched the first six and two-thirds innings. Freshman Danielle Litton (Lodi/ Cloverleaf) got the final two outs.
Offensively, the Yellow Jackets had six base hits with six different players each having one safety. Freshman third baseman Jessica Esch (Worthington) and sophomore leftfielder Rachel Krause (Parma/ Valley Forge) each had a run-scoring single in the two-run sixth inning.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, March 7 when they play a split doubleheader as they face Husson (Maine) College at 9:00 a.m. and then play Eastern (Pa.) University at 1:00 p.m.
