Baldwin Wallace University Softball Team Loses Twice to Otterbein, 3-2 and 7-4

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin Wallace University softball team lost a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games against Otterbein College in an OAC doubleheader today (Tuesday, April 17, 2007) at Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea. The Cardinals won the first game, 3-2, and captured the nightcap, 7-4.

With its losses, the Yellow Jackets are now 6-16 overall and 0-8 in the OAC.  With its wins, Otterbein is 15-9 overall and 5-5 in the OAC.

In the first game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Otterbein came back to tie it with two runs of its own in the top of the fifth and scored the winning run in the sixth.

Despite the Yellow Jacket loss, sophomore leftfielder Rachel Krause (Parma Valley Forge) and sophomore third baseman Shae Monschein (Wellington) led the offense with two base hits each. Krause also had a pair of stolen bases. On the mound, sophomore Katey Munshower (Natrona Heights, Pa./ Highlands) suffered the loss.

In the second game, Otterbein scored three times in the top of the first inning for a 3-0 lead before BW closed to within 3-1 with a run of its own in the bottom of the second inning via a homerun by Monschein. Otterbein broke the game open with three more tallies in the third for a 6-1 lead before BW added a run of its own in the bottom of the third to close to within 6-2. Otterbein scored its final run in the fourth. BW added runs in the fifth to make it 7-3 and one more in the sixth to close to within 7-4 but left the bases loaded. Otterbein closed out the sweep with a one-two-three bottom of the seventh.

Despite the loss, senior second baseman Lisa Liotta (Chardon/ Berkshire) and freshman backup centerfielder Monica Brasee (Wellington) each had a pair of hits to pace the offense. Sophomore Jessica Shaffer (Brookfield) suffered the loss on the mound.

The Yellow Jackets next play on Thursday, April 19, when they travel to Marietta College for an OAC twinbill on Friday at 3:30 p.m.  BW also hosts Heidelberg College in an OAC doubleheader at the Fairgrounds Field on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and ends the week by hosting Muskingum College for two games on Saturday, April 21 at 1:00 p.m.
