The B-W Softball Team Splits an OAC Doubleheader With Ohio Northern University

winning, 4-3 and Losing, 4-2, in Extra Innings

BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Wednesday, April 27, 2005) against OAC-rival Ohio Northern University at the ONU Softball Field in Ada, Ohio. B-W won the first game, 4-3, but lost the second game in extra innings 4-2 in eight innings.

With the split, B-W is now 13-17 overall and 6-8 in the OAC. ONU is now 15-19 overall and 6-10 in the OAC.

In the opener, B-W got on the board in top of the second thanks to a RBI single by sophomore catcher/outfielder Molly Sersig (West Salem/ Northwestern) to take an early 1-0 lead. Ohio Northern took the lead with a three-run fourth inning giving the Polar Bears a 3-1 advantage. The Yellow Jackets then scored three runs of their own in the top of the sixth en route to the 4-3 victory.

At the plate, Sersig hit a perfect two-for-two including a RBI. Senior first baseman Beth Rubosky (Roaming Shores/ Grand Valley) also had two hits and finished two-for-four overall with a run scored. Senior pitcher Jeanette Brezina (Parma Heights/ Valley Forge) picked up the win pitching all seven innings. She also struck out seven batters and is now 7-8 for the season.

In the nightcap, Sersig again drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 1-0 in favor of B-W after two innings of play. The Yellow Jackets added to thier lead with a run in the top of the fourth on another sacrifice flyout by Sersig who recorded her second RBI of the game and her third overall of the day. ONU cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth and later tied the game in the seventh inning at 2-2 to send the game to extra innings. The Polar Bears ended the game thanks to a two-run homerun by Jessica Headings in the eighth for the 4-2 win and the split.

At the plate, senior second baseman Amy Gladieux (Northwood) was a perfect two-for-two with a run scored. Junior outfielder Casey Ward (Amherst/ Steele) also had two hits and finished two-for-three overall. On the mound, senior K.C. Young (Olmsted Twp./ Olmsted Falls) suffered her ninth loss of the season, despite striking out 10 batters, and is now 6-9 overall.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, April 30 when they host OAC-rival Wilmington College for an OAC twinbill in the regular-season home finale at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field at 1:00 p.m.
