Doubleheader of the Season
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split its final doubleheader of the 2005 season today (Monday, May 2, 2005) at Alleghny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Yellow Jackets captured the first game, 7-2, but lost the nightcap, 5-4.
With its split, B-W ends its season at 17-19 overall. Yesterday (May 1), the Yellow Jackets swept Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College to end their OAC regular season with a 9-9 record. With its split today, Allegheny is now 18-16 overall.
In the opener, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and led 4-2 until the sixth when they scored twice and then added another run in the final frame to gain the victory.
Offensively, B-W had seven hits in the first game and took advantage of four Allegheny errors. The big blow in the four-run first inning was a bases loaded clearing double by sophomore first baseman Molly Sersig (West Salem/ Northwestern). On the mound, senior Jeanette Brezina (Parma/ Valley Forge) gained the win as she scattered nine hits to earn the complete-game victory and improve to 9-9 overall. Brezina struck out four Gator batters and walked one. She also contributed a double and a run scored at the plate.
In the nightcap, Allegheny jumped out to a quick, 5-0, lead in the first inning as the Gators made junior Ellen Wolke's (Middletown/ Fenwick) pitching debut a rough one. Wolke gave up six hits and all five runs (four earned) in just two-thirds of an inning. Then the Yellow Jackets began their comeback.
B-W scored once in the second and then added three more runs in the fourth to make the score 5-4. But B-W could get no closer as it ended its season with the split.
Offensively in the second game, five different Yellow Jackets each had a hit, including Sersig who hit her first homerun of the year.
