BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College announces that senior track and field All-Americans Kevin Phipps (Patsakala/ Watkins Memorial) and Kim Chinn (Zanesville/ West Muskingum) as its 2010-11 Outstanding Senior Male and Female Athlete, respectively, and senior soccer standout Jeff Grater (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) and senior softball Academic All-American Tanya Davis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) as its Clyde Lamb Award winners, respectively.
Phipps is the Kenneth Steingass Most Outstanding Senior Male Athlete and Chinn is the Outstanding Female Athlete. Grater is the male Clyde Lamb Award winner and Davis is the female Clyde Lamb Award. The Clyde Lamb Award is annually given by the Ohio Athletic Conference to an outstanding male and female student-athlete at each of the 10 member institutions -- it is the highest honor a student-athlete in the OAC can receive.
Phipps will graduate as arguably one of the best track and field throwers in both B-W and Ohio Athletic Conference history. He owns B-W school-records indoors in the shot put and 35-pound weight throw and outdoors in the discus and hammer events. He has been an OAC Field Event Athlete of the Week on eight occassions. Phipps has earned All-American honors indoors in the weight throw and outdoors twice in the discus and once in the hammer. He is currently qualified for this year’s Div. III National Meet in all three events. He also was the Most Outstanding Field Event Athlete at this year’s OAC Indoor Championship Meet. On the football field, Phipps was a team captain and All-OAC selection at defensive tackle. In addition, Phipps also excells in the classroom where he has a better than 3.0 grade average.
Chinn can arguably be called one of the best and most versitile runners in school history. She earned Division III All-American honors this fall with a 13th place finish at the NCAA Division III National Meet and was the OAC Co-Runner of the Year. In indoor and outdoor track, Chinn has been a member of seven OAC-champion relay teams and has won seven events individually. She earned Division III All-American honors indoors this winter in the mile run and was the Div. III national runner-up last spring in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. This winter, Chinn was named as the OAC’s Julie Zajac Co-Most Outstanding Runner at the indoor championship meet, and last spring at the OAC outdoor championship meet, she was the Dave Lehman Most Outstanding Distance Athlete. On nine separate occassions, three each in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, she has earned OAC Runner of the Week accolades. In addition to being an exceptional athlete, Chinn excells in the classroom and carries a better than 3.75 grade point average, is both Academic All-OAC and a CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District IV selection and is a current candidate for Academic All-America accolades.
Grater, who carries a 3.93 grade point average in business and finance and is completing B-W’s 3/2 Master’s of Business Administration program next year, was a three-year standout on the men’s soccer team. Following his transfer from Calvin (Mich.) College after his freshman season, he earned three varsity letters at B-W and his career culminated in his being named as the 2010 OAC Midfielder of the Year. Grater is a two-time Academic All-OAC and two-time CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District IV student-athlete. He additionally was a 2-time first-team All-OAC choice and 2-time All-Great Lakes Region pick.
Davis, who carries a 3.93 grade average, in B-W’s nationally-renown athletic training program, is a four-year starter for the Yellow Jacket softball squad. She was named as a CAPITAL ONE College Division Academic All-American a year ago and is currently a key member of B-W’s softball team. Individually, Davis already owns school records for doubles and runs batted-in and is closing in on virtually every school hitting mark. She additionally has been an All-OAC and All-Central Region choice and was a 2009 pre-season All-American. Additionally, twice Davis was tabbed as an OAC Hitter of the Week. She also was an Academic All-OAC and CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District IV choice.
