Overall, the eight Yellow Jacket teams compiled an outstanding 228-118-2 overall record. Highlighting the season was the women’s tennis team with an 18-7 overall record, including an undefeated Ohio Athletic Conference regular season mark (9-0) and winning its second straight OAC regular season title, its second consecutive OAC Tournament crown and advancing to the NCAA Division III National Tournament for the second year in a row. Individually, junior baseball centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) highlighted spring activity by being named as a third-team ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-American.
In addition, the women’s outdoor track team was 49-3 overall and the men had a 35-15 mark, the men’s tennis team had its fifth 20-win season in the last six years and finished 20-5 overall, the men’s golf team was 31-21-1 and the women’s golf squad had a 39-25 slate, the baseball team finished 19-19-1 overall and the softball team and its new coach compiled a 17-23 mark with wins in its final three contests.
In women’s tennis, veteran Head Coach Jack Bethlenfalvy, who won his second straight OAC Coach of the Year award, led his team to the OAC title on the strength of three four-year starting senior players in Tiffany Allison (Chagrin Falls/ Kenston), Meggie Glassburn (Canton/ Jackson) and Krista Marshall (Medina/ Senior). The trio ended their careers third, fourth and fifth on the all-time combination wins list and all three earned both All-OAC and Academic All-OAC honors during their careers. In addition, freshman Caitlin Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) and junior Alyssa Trampert (Orchard Park, N.Y./ Orchard Park) each earned All-OAC accolades this spring. Allison and Glassburn were also ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV At-Large selections.
In track, the women narrowly missed winning the 12th OAC “triple” of Head Coach Bill Taraschke’s career. After winning the OAC cross country title in the fall and the indoor track crown this winter, the women placed second at this spring’s OAC Outdoor Championship Meet. The men’s team was an improved and solid fourth at the OAC Meet and overall had a better year in both cross country and track. Highlighting the track season was senior heptathlete Kristen Paulsen (Oberlin/ Firelands) who made her fourth straight trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship Meet and placed 11th individually.
Individually at the OAC Meet, junior distance specialist Ashley Scullion (Kentwood, Mich./ East Kentwood) was named the Dave Lehman Female Distance Runner of the Meet after her wins in the 1,500 and 5,000-meter runs. In addition, Paulsen won an individual title in the 100-meter hurdles. Also earning All-OAC honors for the women were freshman Kim Chinn (Zanesville/ West Muskingum) with second place finishes in the 800 and 1,500-meter runs, junior sprinter Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg) with a second place finish in the 400-meter dash and senior Courtney Beckett (Monaca, Pa./ Hopewell) with a second place showing in the triple jump. Also, the women’s 4 x 800 meter relay team placed first
For the men’s team, five athletes earned All-OAC honors. Junior Derek Hill (Fremont/ Ross) won an individual title in the 5,000-meter run. In the triple jump, sophomore Steve Price (North Olmsted) was second and sophomore Jon Hudson (Shaker Heights) was third. Freshman Kevin Phipps (Reynoldsburg/ Watkins Memorial) placed third in the hammer throw and sophomore Jimmy Eberts (North Canton/ Hoover) was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 4 x 800 meter relay team placed third.
Academically, five women and one male were Academic All-OAC selections. The women’s honorees were seniors Kristen Balogh (Loveland) and Megan Cathcart (Parma/ Senior), Beckett, Paul and sophomore Brittany Giesken (Ottawa/ Ottawa-Glandorf). For the men, senior Aaron Apathy (Parma/ Padua Franciscan) was selected. In addition, Balogh, Beckett and Apathy all earned first-team ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV accolades.
The men’s tennis team finished second during both the OAC regular season (8-1) and at the OAC Tournament and was ranked 24th in the final ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Central Region poll. Highlighting the season was the play of senior No.1 player James Daly (Akron/ Firestone), who was named the Mark Lenssen OAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, broke every B-W, OAC and Ohio collegiate record for victories and was ranked 12th individually in the final ITA poll. Daly, 28-3 in singles play this season, also combined with two separate doubles partners for a 24-4 record at No.1 doubles. He owns B-W school single-season records for singles (29 in 2005), doubles (26 in 2005) and combination (55 in 2005) victories. Daly also owns school, OAC and Ohio collegiate career marks for singles (105 wins and a 105-10 record), doubles (91 wins and a 91-15 record) and combination (196 wins and a 196-25 record) triumphs. In addition to Daly being the Lenssen Award winner, he was a first-team All-OAC pick for the fourth straight year and was joined on the first-team by freshman No.2 player Tyler Adams (Wheelersburg). In addition, Juniors Andy Redd (Archbold) and Jim Kucera (Mentor) were named honorable
In men’s golf, the team set a school-record with six players averaging less than 80-strokes per round during the combined fall and spring seasons. Overall, sophomore No.1 player Nick Bryan (Zanesville/ Bishop Rosecrans) led the team with a 74.29 stroke average in six tournaments and 10.5 rounds of 18 holes despite missing a majority of the spring season due to an injury. He was followed by sophomore All-OAC player Mike Falk (Strongsville) at 76.45, senior All-OAC player Matt Lewis (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) at 77.67, senior Mike Jenior (Rootstown) at 79.24, freshman Matt Weiss (Mentor) at 79.30 and freshman Brian Routhieaux (Gibsonia, Pa./ Mars Area) at 79.48 strokes per round. In addition, Falk led the team to a fourth place finish at the OAC Tournament with an eighth place individual performance to earn All-OAC accolades. Both Bryan and Lewis also were Academic All-OAC At-Large choices.
In women’s golf, the team finished a solid third at the OAC Championship and was led by senior No.1 player Molly Scheetz (Canton/ Perry) for the fourth straight season. Scheetz led the team with a fourth place individual finish at the OAC Tournament and an 86.88 stroke average. Scheetz ended her career as a four-time All-OAC selection and three-time Academic All-OAC choice. In addition, the Denison Invitational medalist was a three-time ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV selection.
The baseball team had five All-OAC selections and six Academic All-OAC choices, led by Kidd. The selections included four second-team picks in Kidd, senior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Marion Steele), senior designated hitter Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg) and junior first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood). In addition, senior leftfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) was tabbed to the honorable mention group. Kidd and Kreisher were second-team All-OAC choices for the second straight season. The Academic All-OAC selections included Kidd, Radca, senior second baseman Nate Luken (Dayton/ Chaminade-Julienne), junior pitchers Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere) and Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City) and junior outfielder Mike Brisky (Berea). Brisky, Kidd and Luken are all repeat honorees from the 2007 team. In addition, Kidd and Luken were selected as ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV picks.
The softball team was greatly improved under Head Coach Tom Spencer and finished the campaign with seven more wins than in 2007. Freshman designated player Tanya Davis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and junior first baseman Caitlin Myor (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Senior) were All-OAC selections. Davis was a first-team selection and Myor was tabbed to the honorable mention group. Myor hit a school single-season record 12 homeruns and had a school single- season record 46 runs batted-in. Davis also was a first-team All-Central Region selection by the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association/ Louisville Slugger and set school records for a single-season with 17 doubles and 42 runs scored. In addition, junior catcher Shea Monschein (Wellington) was an Academic All-OAC selection.
