Yellow Jacket Softball Team Seeks an OAC Tourney Berth in 2007
BEREA, OHIO — The 2007 Baldwin Wallace University softball team will seek a spot in this spring’s Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. To do it, Head Coach Joe Yocabet feels his team will have to play to the best of its ability.
“We return a solid corp of veterans, two good pitchers and a group of newcomers that can help us win and gain a spot in the OAC Tournament,” said Yocabet, who is the second winningest softball coach in school history with 216 victories in 11 seasons. “We will have to play well because the OAC is a tough league from top-to-bottom.”
Yocabet enters the season needing to replace four everyday starters from last year’s team that finished 19-18 overall and 8-10 in the OAC, including one of the all-time best in 2006 graduate and two-time All-American Nicole Loudin. What Yocabet does return is power-hitting catcher Molly Sersig (West Salem/ Northwestern), who batted .333, slammed eight homeruns, drove in 30 runs and had an outstanding .983 fielding average.
Yocabet also returns a solid sophomore group that is led by pitchers Katey Munshower (Natrona Hts., Pa./ Highlands) and Jessica Shaffer (Brookfield), first baseman Caitlin Myor (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria), third baseman Shae Monschein (Wellington) and outfielder Rachel Krause (Parma/ Valley Forge).
Munshower and Shaffer threw the bulk of the innings a year ago and probably will do so again if freshman Meghan Ronk (Crestline) is unable to play this spring due to an injury. Munshower was 9-8 with a 2.99 earned run average and 51 strikeouts in 110 innings pitched. She also batted .250 with three doubles and seven runs batted-in. Shaffer was 7-7 on the mound with a 4.36 ERA and 42 whiffs in 98 innings of work. She batted .218 with six two-baggers and eight RBI. Monschein also had a strong first season and hit .230 with three doubles and six RBI. Myor hit .197 with three doubles and four RBI. Krause hit just .100 but was a perfect nine-of-nine in stolen base attempts.
“We feel that all five of our sophomores got great experience a year ago and will be better this season,” said Yocabet. “We also expect junior Carrie Hoffer (Galion) to help, and then we will look for our newcomers and backups from last year to fill the gaps. If every player dedicates herself to working hard and improving all season, we should be just fine.”
The Yellow Jackets open the 2007 season on their annual spring break trip to Florida where they will play Emerson (Mass.) College in their first game on March 4 at 9:00 a.m. BW will play 10 games on its annual trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
