BW Outdoor Track & Field Teams Compete at Ohio Wesleyan Ron Althoff Invitational

DELAWARE, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men’s and women’s outdoor track & field teams competed at the unscored Ohio Wesleyan University Ron Althoff Invitational Meet today (Tuesday, May 15, 2012). The meet is utilized as a “Last Chance” meet for athletes to hit or better their NCAA Division III national qualifying marks.

To qualify for NCAA Division III meet, both men and women’s running events must finish top 16 nationally, men’s field events must finish top 20 nationally, and women’s field events must finish top 22 nationally.

Highlighting the meet for BW was the men’s 4x100 relay team consisting of senior Mike Smith (Wintersville/ Indian Creek) and sophomores Shawn Cordes (Litchfield/ Medina Buckeye), Josiah Holt (Elyria/ Grafton Midview) and Kevin Johnson (Maple Heights/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) who finishing in first place by crossing the finish line in a season-best time of 41.74 seconds and ranking them 13th in NCAA Division III.

For the women, junior thrower Christina Perrine (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) led the way in the field events as she finished second in the discus with a throw of 144’5” and third in the hammer with a mark of 160’2”. Senior Leslie Purnell (Springfield/Catholic Central) placed fourth in the hammer with a season-best mark of 154’5”. Sophomore Victoria Brown (Berlin Heights/Western Reserve) finished second in the high jump clearing a height of 5’4.25”. Also freshman Nicole Christner (Minerva) finished fifth overall in the heptathalon with final score of 4,173 points.

In the running events for the women, junior Kaylan Lemon (Canton/ Perry) led the way as she finished first in the 200-meter dash in a season-best time of 25.01 seconds to rank 30th nationally in Division III. Lemon also finished fourth in the 100-meter dash as she crossed the finish line in a time of 12.35 seconds. Also, sophomore Brooke Hradisky (Aurora) finished in fifth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:22.72, and she finished sixth in the 800 meter dash as she crossed the finish line with a time of 2:17.72. Both times for Hradisky were season-bests. Also junior Tess Hoogeveen (Westerville/South) finished sixth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 12:22.80.

The final “last chance” meet takes place next week, on Friday, May 18 at North Central (Ill.) College for the Gregory Invitational in Naperville, Illinois.  The 2011 NCAA Division III National Championship Meet at Claremont-Mud-Scripps (Calif.) College in Claremont, California from May 24-26.
