Highlighting the Yellow Jacket qualifiers are junior two-time Division III All-American Mitch Supan (Medina/ Walsh Jesuit). The others are senior Leslie Purnell (Springfield/ Central Catholic) and Mike Smith (Wintersville/ Indian Creek), junior Zach Marinucci (Brunswick) and sophomores Cristina Perrine (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark), Shawn Cordes (Litchfield/ Medina Buckeye), Kevin Johnson (Garfield Hts./ Cleveland St. Ignatius) and Josiah Holt (Elyria/ Grafton Midview). To qualify for NCAA Division III meet, both men and women’s running events must finish top 16 nationally, men’s field events must finish top 20 nationally, and women’s field events must finish top 22 nationally.

Supan returns for his third NCAA Division III outdoor meet and Marinucci (2012 indoor), Purnell (2012 indoor) and Perrine (2011 outdoor) are all making their second trip and each member of the men’s 4 x 100 meter relay team are making their first trip.

Supan, who placed eighth in the discus as a freshman (163’5”) and fourth as a sophomore (168’3”) to earn his two All-America accolades (the top eight competitors in each event and relay earn NCAA Division III All-America honors), is qualified  sixth in the shot put (56’3.75”), 12th in the discus (172’8”) and 14th in the hammer (187’3”). A year ago, Supan also placed 17th in the shot put.

Purnell, who just missed being an All-American with a ninth place finish in the shot put (43’9”) at this winter’s NCAA Division III Indoor National Championship Meet, is ranked 17th in the shot put (43’8.5”) and 20th in the discus (142’10”).

Smith, who is a senior academically but has another season of athletic eligibility remaining, will joined on the 4 x 100-meter relay team by Cordes, Johnson and Holt.  The quartet ranks 14th with a season-best time of 41.57 seconds. Johnson and Holt also were key members of last fall’s 8-2 Yellow Jacket football team and the entire group returns in 2013.

Marinucci, who narrowly missed All-America honors at the national indoor meet by placing ninth in the shot put (54’2”), currently ranks 10th in the shot put (55’3.75”) and 19th in the discus (166’7”).

Perrine, who placed 23rd in the discus at last year’s Division III Outdoor Championship Meet and was ninth in the 35-pound weight throw at this year’s Div. III Indoor Championship Meet, currently ranks fourth in the discus (150’11”). This season’s best throw is three feet better than her best throw of a year ago.
