B-W Outdoor Track and Field Teams Begin Season at Unscored Coastal Carolina (S.C.) Invitational

BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams opened the 2007-2008 season this weekend (Friday and Saturday, March 14-15, 2008) at the unscored Coastal Carolina University Invitational Meet in Conway, South Carolina.

Highlighting the second day of the meet for the women was junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference distance runner Ashley Scullion (Kentwood, Mich./ East Kentwood) who placed second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:39.31.  Scullion also placed fifth in the 1,500-meter run in 4:44.67.  Also in the 1,500, freshman Kim Chinn (Zanesville/ West Muskingum) tallied her first of two seventh place performances in a time of 4:46.00 and she followed that up with a 2:20.22 in the 800-meter run.  Junior All-OAC sprinter Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg) ran the 400-meter dash in 57.88, good for fourth place.  Freshman thrower Rachel Marinucci (Brusnwick) finished 18th with a 117’ 3” throw in the discus.   

For the men, freshman thrower Kevin Phipps (Reynoldsburg/ Watson Memorial) placed 14th in the discus throw with a toss of 138’ 0”.  Sophomore decathlete Steve Price (North Olmsted) recorded a 20’ 6.25” leap in the long jump, good for 12th place.  In the triple jump, Price earned a 14th place with a 42’ 7” jump.  Sophomore distance runner Mark Buhoveckey (Brunswick/ Parma Padua Franciscan) ran the 5,000-meter run in 16:09.30 for a 15th place finish.  In the 1,500-meter run, junior distance runner Nate Bowen (Fremont/ Ross) earned 12th place in a time of 4:03.79.  Bowen also had an 11th place performance in the 800-meter run with a 1:59.08 clip.  In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore distance specialist James Eberts (North Canton/ Hoover) recorded a time of 10:08.97 and got ninth place.

On the first day of competition for the men, freshman distance runner Brian Gibbons (Fairview Park/ Rocky River) was the top finisher with a sixth place showing in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 34:02.88. In addition, Bowen placed ninth in the  3,000-meter run in 8:58.13, Price was 16th in the javelin with a throw of 149’2” and sophomore Greg Patrick (Collins/ Western Reserve) placed 21st in the hammer toss with a throw of 137’9”.

For the women, junior Theresa Carona (Canton/ Massillon Perry) placed 17th in the javelin with a toss of 106’9” and was 23rd in the hammer witha throw of 115’3”.

The Yellow Jacket men and women will next compete on Saturday, March 22 when they travel to New Concord, Ohio to compete at the Muskingum College Invitational Meet at 11:00 a.m.
