Yellow Jacket Throwers Compete at North Central College Gregory Track and Field Invitational
NAPERVILLE, ILL. -- Select Baldwin Wallace University individual performers competed on Thursday, May 17 at the North Central College Gregory Track and Field Invitational. The first of two straight “last chance” meets for those performers hoping to qualify for the The 2012 NCAA Division III National Championship Meet at Claremont-Mud-Scripps (Calif.) College in Claremont, California from May 24-26.
Leading the way at the NCC Invitational was junior All-American thrower Mitch Supan (Medina/Walsh Jesuit) led the way as he placed first in the discus with a throw of 161-feet and five inches. Supan also finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 181’5”.
In addition to Supan, junior Zach Marinucci (Brunswick) placed third in the discus with a mark of 157’.1”. Junior Jake Buckey (Geneva) and Marinucci placed 10th and 11th in the hammer throw with a marks of 162’00” (Buckey ) and 156’6” (Marinucci), respectively.
For the women, junior Cristina Perrine (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark) placed first in the discus with a throw of 149’3” while senior teammate Leslie Purnell (Springfield/Catholic Central) finished fourth in the discus with a season and career best mark of 142’10”. In the hammer throw, Perrine and Purnell placed sixth and eighth with a marks of 157’10” (Perrine) and 151’00” (Purnell), respectively. Also in the hammer throw, freshman Danielle Torrence (Canton/South) placed 11th a mark of 140’1”.
The 2012 regular season ended at the April 27-28 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet when both the BW men and women placed second of 10 schools.
BW’s men and women’s student-athletes will get one more chance tomorrow (May 18, 2012) at Augustana to qualify for the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championship Meet at Claremont-Mud-Scripps (Calif.) College in Claremont, California from May 24-26.
