Kevin Phipps Places Fourth In Hammer
For Fifth All-American Honor
DELAWARE, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College senior track and field sensation Kevin Phipps (Patsakala/ Watkins Memorial) placed fourth in the hammer throw today (Thursday, May 26) on the first of the three-day 2011 NCAA Division III National Track & Field Championship Meet at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware , Ohio. The fourth-place finish makes him a five-time Div. III All-American, including twice in the hammer.
Phipps, who placed sixth a year ago when the meet was held at B-W and in The George Finnie Stadium in Berea, threw the hammer 194-feet and four-inches on his second attempt to earn All-America acclaim again.
This was the first of three events that Phipps will compete. He will throw the shot put tomorrow (Friday, Mat 27) and in the discus on Saturday (May 28). In addition to earning All-America accolades twice in the hammer, he was an All-American once in the 35-pound weight throw (2010) and twice in the discus (2009 and 2010). Entering the meet, Phipps is ranked fifth nationally in the discus with a season-best toss of 174'2". He is one spot back of sophomore All-American and teammate Mitch Supan (Medina/ Walsh Jesuit), who is ranked fourth with a B-W school-record of 174'8". Phipps enters the shot put competition ranked 16th with a season-best throw of 53'8.5" while Supan is ranked 17th at 53'6.25".
This spring, he was tabbed as B-W's Senior Male Outstanding Athlete recipient -- the Kenneth Steingass Award. Phipps also was a solid student and leader on campus. He graduated with a better than 3.0 grade point average, was the team captain for both football and track and earned All-OAC accolades on the gridiron as a defensive tackle.
In addition to Phipps and Supan competing in the meet, senior All-American pentathlete Emily Oliver (Waynesburg/ Sandy Valley) currently stands 10th of 22 competitors in the 7-event heptathlon, senior 3-time All-American Kim Chinn (Zanesville/ West Muskingum) is ranked second in the 3,000-meter steeeplechase and sophomore Cristina Perrine (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark) is ranked 16th in the women's discus. A year ago, Chinn was the national runner-up in the steeplechase and was an All-American while Oliver placed 15th in the heptathlon.
