Baldwin Wallace Women Place First and Men Fourth at OAC East Meet in Marietta, Ohio
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin Wallace University men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Ohio Athletic Conference East Meet today (Saturday, March 29, 2008) inside Don Drumm Stadium at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. The women’s team placed first with 169 points and the men’s team placed fourth with 66 points in the five-team field comprised of John Carroll University, Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum College, and BW.
Highlighting the day’s events for the women was freshman distance runner Sam Robinson (Mount Orab/ Southwest Brown) who placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 13:09.22. In the 1,500-meter run, junior All-OAC distance specialist Ashley Scullion (Kentwood, Mich./ East Kentwood placed first in 4:45.56 and freshman distance specialist Kimberly Chinn (Zanesville/ West Muskingum) followed behind Scullion in 4:51.48. Chinn also finished first in the 800-meter dash in a time of 2:21.86. Junior All-OAC sprinter Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg) took first place honors in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.68. In the 100-meter dash, junior sprinter Jordan Hill (Carrollton) placed first in 13:06.00. In the 200-meter dash Paul ran a 26.14, good for first place, and Hill ran a 26.49, which gave her second place. Senior hurdler Courtney Smith (Mayfield) placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:11.38. In the 5,000-meter run, freshman distance runner Karin Coyne (Columbia Station/ Columbia) placed second with a time of 19:13.25. The 4x400-meter relay tandem of senior sprinter Tina Lewis (Brecksville/ Brecksville-Broadview Heights), Smith, Chinn, and Paul finsihed second in 4:08.34. In the shot put, freshman throwers Rachel Marinucci (Brunswick) and Emily Lowe (Sandusky/ Perkins) tossed the shot 36 feet, nine inches (second place) and 33 feet, 5.75 inches (third place), respectively. Junior thrower Theresa Carona (Canton/ Massillon Perry) tallied a 110 f00t, 11 inch throw in the discus throw and Marinucci placed third with a toss of 105 feet, 1.50 inches. Senior pole vaulter Magen Maleski (West Alexandria/ Twin Valley) placed third in the pole vault with a jump of nine feet, 6.25 inches.
For the men, junior distance runner Nate Bowen (Fremont/ Ross) won the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:03.13 and placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.21. In the 5,000-meter run, junior distance runner Derek Hill (Fremont/ Ross) ran a 15.33.14, good for second place. The 4x100-meter team of freshman sprinter Drew Matak (Salem/ Senior), sophomore sprinter Jayson Hedberg (Sandusky/ Perkins), junior sprinter Mike Kowal (Parma/ Senior), and freshman sprinter Alex Evans (Newbury/ Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) finished second in a time of 43.73. Sophomore thrower Brandon Fast (Ashland/ Senior) placed third in the javelin throw with a toss of 152 feet, 11 inches. In the high jump, freshman jumper Zach Poole (Mentor) placed third with a jump of six feet. Freshman thrower Kevin Phipps (Reynoldsburg/ Watkins Memorial) recorded third place in hammer throw with a throw of 141 feet, 9.50 inches.
The Yellow Jacket men and women will next compete on Saturday, April 5 when they travel to Delaware, Ohio to compete at the Marv Frye Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan University at 12:30 p.m.
