Baldwin-Wallace Women Stand First and Men Third After Day One of OAC Championship Meet

BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College men’s and women’s track and field teams completed the first day of the two-day Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet today (Friday April 25, 2008) hosted by Wilmington College.  After six events, the women are in first place with 55.5 points, 16 points clear of second place Mount Union College, who has 39.5. The men stand in third with 30 points, behind Ohio Northern University (61.5), Mount Union (46).
 
For the women, four athletes earned All-OAC status (top-3 places in each event). Sophomore Marina Ortiz (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) was second in the javelin (113’11”). In the discus, freshman Emily Lowe (Sandusky/Perkins) was second (116’5”) and junior Theresa Carona (Canton/Massillon Perry) was third (114’9”). In the 10,000 meter run, freshman Karin Coyne (Columbia Station/Columbia) was third (41:23.61)   Qualifying for tomorrow’s finals in the 100-meter hurdles were senior Kristen Paulsen (Oberlin/Firelands), who was first(15.11) and freshman Emily Oliver (Waynesburg/Sandy Valley) was eighth (16.97). Oliver also qualified for the 400-meter hurdle finals with a sixth place finish (1:08.13).  Also in the 400-meter hurdles, senior Courtney Smith (Mayfield) was eighth (1:09.03). Junior Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg) was qualified in second place in the 400-meter dash (58.32) and junior Jordan Hill (Carrollton) was third in the 100-meter dash preliminaries (12.43).  Hill (26.14) and Paul (26.24) both also qualified for the 200-meter dash finals, third and fourth respectively. The 4x800 meter relay team was first with a time of 9:30.48.   
 
For the men, two athletes earned All-OAC honors. Sophomore Brandon Fast (Ashland/Senior) was second in the javelin (178’7”) and sophomore Steve Price (North Olmsted) placed third in the long jump (22’1”).  Junior Alan Kidon (Chardon) qualified for the finals in tomorrow’s 400-meter hurdles with an eighth (57.26).  The 4x800 meter relay team was third with a time 7:55.09.
 
The second day of competition will begin tomorrow with the field events at 10:00 a.m. and the running events scheduled to start at 1:40 p.m.
