Baldwin Wallace Hosts Annual Unscored Paul “Sparky” Adams Invitational
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the annual and unscored Paul “Sparky” Adams Invitational Meet on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea. Also competing were Albion (Mich.) College, Ashland University, Bowling Green State University, Case Western Reserve University, Lake Erie College, Mercyhurst (Pa.) College, Slippery Rock (Pa.) University, Thiel (Pa.) College and Youngstown State University.
Winning the Paul “Sparky”Adams Most Outstanding Performer Awards were BW sophomore Steve Price (North Olmsted) for the Yellow Jacket men and junior Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg) for the women. Price won two events on the day. He won the long jump with a leap of 22-feet and one and three-quarter inches and the javelin with a toss of 172’11”. Paul won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.46 seconds which provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division III National Championship Meet at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh in Oshkosh, Wisconsin held May 23-25.
Placing for the men’s team was sophomore Jon Hudson (Shaker Heights) with a second place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 42’9”, freshman Zach Poole (Mentor) finished tied for second in the high jump with a leap of 6’0.75”, and sophomore Greg Patrick (Collins/ Western Reserve) placed second in the shot put with a toss of 47’5.25”.
Placing first for the women were senior Megan Cathcart (Parma/ Senior) in the high jump with a leap of 5’0.25”, senior Magen Maleski (West Alexandria/ Twin Valley) in the javelin throw with a toss of 109’11”, junior Ashley Scullion (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:44.53 and freshman Kim Chinn (Zanesville/ West Muskingum) in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.50. Both Scullion and Chinn narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA meet.
Also placing for the women were freshman Emily Oliver (Waynesburg/ Sandy Valley), who tied for second in the high jump with a leap of 4’10.25”; sophomore Marina Ortiz (Tucson, Ariz./ Salpointe Catholic), who finished second in the javelin with a toss of 107’11”; freshman Karin Coyne (Columbia Station/ Columbia), who finished second in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5’5.88”; senior Kristen Balogh (Loveland), who finished second in the 5000-meter run with a time of 19:12.25.
The Yellow Jacket men and women will next compete on Friday and Saturday, April 25-26 when they travel to Wilmington and Wilmington College to compete in the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet. First day events are scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. Second day events are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
