Baldwin-Wallace Track and Field Completes Day One of OAC Championship

BEREA, OHIO--  The Baldwin-Wallace College men's and women's track and field teams completed the first day of the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet today (Friday, May 11, 2007) at the George Finnie Stadium in Berea, Ohio.  After the first day of events, the men's team stands in third place with 31 points, behind Mount Union College (51) and Ohio Northern (52).  The women are in first place with 52.5 points.

Highlighting the day's events for the men was sophomore Derek Hill (Fremont/Ross) in the 10,000 meter finals who ran a 35:22.31, placing 11th.  In the 400-meter preliminaries, sophomore Alan Kidon (Chardon) placed fifth and qualified with a 56.00.  Senior Steve Johnson (Canton/Central Catholic) placed first in the pole vault finals with a leap of 14-feet, nine-inches.  In the long jump finals freshman Steven Price (North Olmsted) finished sixth with a jump of 21-feet, 7.25-inches. In the discus finals freshman Greg Patrick (Collins/Western Reserve) placed fifth in the discus finals with a hurl of 147-feet, four-inches and senior Chris Aurand (Hudson) placed 10th with 132-feet, four-inches.  In the javelin finals, freshman Brandon Fast (Ashland) finished in second place, throwing the javelin 159-feet, 10-inches.  Also in the javelin toss, Johnson placed eighth with a toss of 146-feet, eight-inches and Price placed 11th with 140-feet, 11-inches.  In the men's final event of the day, the 4-by-800-meter relay finals, the tandem of sophomore Nate Bowen (Fremont/Ross), freshman James Eberts (North Canton/Hoover), freshman Justin Tuckosh (Brook Park/Midpark), and freshman Jeff Bonezzi (Medina) finished fourth with a time of 7:51.52.

On the women's side sophomore Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg), placing fourth in the 200-meter dash preliminaries and qualified with a time of 25.82.  In the 400-meter dash preliminaries, Paul finished in first place with a time of 58.70 and senior Kim Johnson (Athens) finished in eighth at 1:01.87 as both runners qualified for the finals.  Juniors Kristen Paulsen (Oberlin/Firelands) and Jeanne Osborne (Oak Harbor) finished second and sixth, with qualifying times of 15:00 and 15:49, respectively.  Freshman Jennifer Miller (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) tied for third place with a leap of 10-feet and junior Magen Maleski (West Alexandria/Twin Valley) tied for sixth with a leap of nine-feet, eight-inches in the pole vault finals.  In the long jump finals, Paulsen placed fourth with a jump of 16-feet, 11.5-inches, junior Megan Cathcart (Parma) jumped 16-feet, 7.75-inches, good for sixth place, and freshman Jaclyn Muenchow (Worthington/Kilbourne) placed 12th after jumping 15-feet.  In the discus finals, senior Mandy Quisno (Oak Harbor) placed third with a throw of 120-feet, six-inches.  Also in the discus throw, Miller placed 10th with a throw of 104-feet, nine inches, and sophomore Theresa Carona (Canton/Perry) placed 11th, with a throw of 103-feet, four-inches.  Four Yellow Jackets placed in the javelin finals as  Paulsen in first place with a 117-feet, eight-inch toss, Carona in second place with a toss of 115-feet, nine-inches, freshman Marina Ortiz (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) in third place with a toss of 115-feet, nine-inches, and finally, sophomore Sam Via (Brookville) finished in seventh place after tossing 97-feet, four-inches.  In the last women's event of the day, the 4-by-800-meter run, the tandem of senior Rihana Knotts (Middletown/Madison), senior Kelly Staruch (Hinckley/Highland),  freshman Brittany Giesken (Ottawa/Glandorf), and sophomore Ashley Scullion (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood), placed second with a time of 9:22.95.

The second day events will beingin with the field events at 10:00 a.m. and the track events will start at approximately 1:40 p.m. tomorrow at the George Finnie Stadium.
