BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College outdoor track and field performer, Jen Southall (Willoughby/ South), competed in the second day of the 2004 NCAA Division III National Championship Meet hosted by Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.
Southall made her second appearance and is one of three Yellow Jackets competing in this year's national meet including junior Eric Schmuhl (Medina/ Senior) and senior Alex Johnson (Berea/ Olmsted Falls High School). Southall competed in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase and finished in 12th place with a time of 11:06.93. A year ago, she placed sixth and had a career best time of 10:49.76 at the 2003 NCAA Championships.
Schmuhl, the 2004 Ohio Athletic Champion in the 400 meter hurdles, posted a time of 55.32 in his individual preliminary heat on day one of the national meet. Despite a good performance, he did not advance into the 400 meter hurdle finals. Schmuhl posted his best time of the season (53.28) at last week's B-W Twilight Meet qualifing him for this week's meet.
Johnson will compete in the shot put and discus events tomorrow, Saturday (May 29). He was 10th at this year's NCAA Division III Indoor National Championship Meet in the shot put and has a career-best of 52-feet and 11 and three-quarters inches which he set this spring at the All-Ohio Track & Field Championship Meet on April 16. Johnson was also 14th at last year’s NCAA Div. III Outdoor National Championship Meet in the discus and has a 2004 best of 158' 2" which he set three weeks ago in a meet at Westminster (Pa.) College. His career-best throw in the discus is 164'10".
