Baldwin-Wallace College Outdoor Track and Field Teams Compete at the 2004

Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet in Tiffin

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's track and field team finished fifth of 10 schools and the women were tied for fifth of 10 teams at the 2004 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet in Tiffin and at Heidelberg College. For the men, senior Alex Johnson (Berea/ Olmsted Falls) led the way as he won the shot put with a throw of 51-feet and eighth and one-quarter inches, was second in the discus with a throw of 154' and fifth in the javelin with a toss of 171' 11". In addition, junior Eric Schmuhl (Medina Senior) won the 400 meter hurdles with an NCAA Division III provisional national qualifying time of 53.84 seconds, and senior Jon Shoffstall (Lakeview/ Indian Lake) won the hammer with a throw of 167'6". Shoffstall was also third in the discus at 152' and third in the shot put with a throw of 48' 0.75".

For the women, sophomore Mary Griglak (Berea/ Lutheran West) won an individual title in the 200 meter dash in 26.22 seconds. She also waws second in the 100 meter dash in 12.90 seconds and ran on the third place 400 meter relay team (50.00 seconds) and eighth place 1600 meter relay team. In addition, senior Stacy Havaich (Austintown Fitch) was second in the 1500 meter run in a season's best time of 4:45.47, senior All-American Jen Southall (Willoughby South) was third in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a season's-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 11:01.43 and freshman Rihana Knotts (Middletown Madison) was third in the 800 meters in 2:19.68. Joining Griglak on the third place 400 meter relay team were sophomore Liz Redd (Canton GlenOak), junior Jayna Rasmussen (Westlake/ Lutheran West) and junior Rhiannon Regal (Painesville Harvey).

This week, B-W will host the annual Heptathlon-Decathlon Meet at The George Finnie Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 18-19 and then host its annual Twilight Invitational/ "Last Chance" Meet at Finnie Stadium on Friday. Action in the Heptathlon-Decathlon Meet begins at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday and at 12:00 p.m., noon on Wednesday. The Twilight Meet begins with the hammer at 1:00 p.m. Running event preliminaries begin at 4:50 p.m. and more field events at 5:00 p.m. Results from the Twilight Meet will be made available on this Web Site on Friday.

National Qualifiers -- To date, three Yellow Jackets are qualified for the 2004 NCAA Division III National Championship Meet at Millikin (Ill.) University on May 27-29. They are Johnson in the shot put (52' 11.75") and discus (158'2"), senior Jon Shoffstall (Lakeview/ Indian Lake) in the discus (156'5") and hammer (169'0") and senior Jen Southall (Willoughby South) in the 3000 meter steeplechase (11:01.43).
