BEREA, OHIO -- Olmsted Falls High School graduate and Baldwin-Wallace College senior Alex Johnson finished ninth in the shot put today at the 2004 NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track & Field Championship Meet at Millikin University in Decatuer, Illinois.
Johnson, the 2004 Ohio Athletic Conference champion in the shot put both indoors and outdoors, was ninth with a throw of 52-feet and three and three-quarters inches. It was Johnson's second consecutive appearance at the national meet. He was 10th at this winter's NCAA Div. III indoor meet. Johnson qualified for this year's outdoor national meet with a career-best of 52-feet and 11 and three-quarters inches which he set this spring at the All-Ohio Track & Field Championship Meet. Johnson was also 14th at last year’s NCAA Div. III Outdoor National Championship Meet in the discus. His career-best throw in the discus is 164'10".
In addition, Johnson is a two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection.
In addition to Johnson, senior Jen Southall (Willoughby South) and junior Eric Schmuhl (Medina Senior) competed at this year's national meet. Southall, an All-American last year with a sixth place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase, was 12th this year. Schmuhl, making his first national meet appearance, was eighth in his heat of the 400 meter hurdles and did not qualify for the finals.
