BEREA, OHIO – Two Baldwin-Wallace College cross country and track & field student-athletes, senior D’Arcy Hlavin (Berea) and junior Krysten Kovach (North Royalton/ Parma Padua Fransiscan), have been named to the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV honor squad.
Hlavin, who is a first-team selection and now qualifies for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America ballot, is a repeat selection. This is Kovach’s first ESPN The Magazine honor, and she is a second-team choice.
Hlavin, who competed in the 1,500 meter run at last week’s 2010 NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track & Field Championship Meet which B-W hosted in Berea, graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in sports medicine and pre-physical therapy and carried a 3.694 grade point average. The Dean’s List student who is a member of the Alpha Lambda and Chi Sigma Alpha honor societies was an Academic All-OAC and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV selection in 2008-09.
Overall, Hlavin’s is one of the most celebrated women’s cross country and track student-athletes in school history and capped her career by being named as this year’s B-W Outstanding Female Athlete. She is a three-time All-OAC honoree in cross country, including being the OAC Runner of the Year in 2008-09, twice earning All-Great Lakes Region honors and twice ran at the NCAA Division III National Meet, including this fall when B-W hosted the championship meet.

In track, Hlavin is a multiple All-Ohio and OAC champion. At this winter’s OAC Indoor Championship Meet, she was named as the Julie Zajac Most Outstanding Distance Runner as she won the 1-mile run, placed second in the 800 meters, seventh in the 5,000 meters and ran the anchor leg on the winning distance medley relay squad. She missed this spring’s OAC Outdoor Championship Meet due to an injury. In addition to placing 18th in the 1,500 meters at last week’s NCAA Meet, she was provisionally qualified in the 800-meter run.
Kovach is a chemistry and pre-med major and Dean’s List student with a 3.835 grade point average. The Alpha Lambda Honor Society member also was a member of the OAC champion cross country team and ran a leg on the OAC outdoor champion 4x800 relay team. Individually, she placed second during the OAC Outdoor Championships in the 1,500-meter run and fourth in the 800 meters.
“We are extremely proud of the accomplishments, both academically and athletically, of both D’Arcy and Krysten,” said veteran Head Coach Dr. Bill Taraschke. “D’Arcy is simply one of the best to ever compete at B-W and is a fierce competitor and great team leader. Krysten also leads by-example and is outstanding in every way. Both young woman are highly deserving of the honor.”
