Yellow Jacket Men's Tennis Team Beats PSU-Behrend and Now Begins to Prepare
for the Annual ITA Tournament
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team defeated Penn State Behrend College, 7-0, last Saturday (Sept. 17) in Erie, Pennsylvania. It is BW's lone fall dual match.
In singles play, the Yellow Jackets received wins from number one player and sophomore James Daly (Akron/ Firestone), senior No.2 player Brandon May (New Philadelphia), junior No.3 player Ryan McCartney (Lorain/ Admiral King), freshman No.4 player Jim Kucera (Mentor), freshman No.5 player Zach Long (Ashland/ Senior) and senior No.6 player Dan Mitoff (Lorain/ Admiral King). In doubles play, the No.1 duo of Daly and Kucera, the No.2 pair of May and Long and the No.3 tandem of McCartney and Mitoff each won.
The victory for the Yellow Jackets began another successful season for 17th-year Head Coach Brian Rector. The win improved Rector's career mark to 267-59, including a 45-2 mark the past two years (22-0 in 2003-3004 and 23-2 a year ago). BW has won the past two Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament titles.
Individually with his win, Daly ran his career mark to 30-2 overall. A year ago, Daly was 29-2, May was 19-1, McCartney was 13-4 and Mitoff was 2-0. Both Kucera and Long are playing their first season of collegiate tennis. In doubles play, McCartney and Mitoff were 6-0 last season, are 1-0 this year and also played as a tandem in high school.
The Yellow Jacket men will back in action this week when they travel to the annual ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Regional Tournament from September 23-26.
