The Baldwin Wallace University Men's Tennis Team Has Another Pair of Victories

by Shutout, Now Heads South to Hilton Head, S.C.

BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team recorded its third and fourth straight wins by shutout (Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005) as the Yellow Jackets defeated both Malone College, 7-0, and Ohio Dominican College, 7-0, at the North Ridge Racquet Club.

The two victories give the defending Ohio Athletic Conference Yellow Jackets a perfect 5-0 dual match record as BW also defeated Allegheny )Pa.) College, 4-3, during the fall portion of its schedule and beat both Penn State-Behrend College and Tiffin University last weekend (Feb. 19) in its first two dual matches of 2005.

In its first match win against NAIA foe Malone, number one singles player, 2004 OAC Player of the Year and senior Mike Wagner (Avon Lake), number two player and freshman James Daly (Akron/ Firestone), senior number three player Ward Crane (Hudson/ Western Reserve), senior number four player Adam Slabodnick (Ashland/ Senior), junior number five player Derek Sloan (Bellevue) and sophomore Ryan McCartney (Lorain/ Admiral King) all won in straight sets. In doubles play, the number one tandem of Wagner and Crane, the number two duo of Daly and Slabodnick and the number three tandem of McCartney and junior Dan Mitoff (Lorain/ Admiral King) also won.

In its win versus ODU, Wagner, Daly and Crane won at No. 1, No.2 and No.3, Sloan won at No.4, McCartney won at No.5 and ssenior Matt Seitz (Olmsted Falls) won at No.6. Five of the six players won in straight sets, including Seitz who remains unbeaten in his collegiate career at 18-0 overall. Seitz was 10-0 as a sophomore in 2002-2003. In doubles action, Wagner and Crane won at No.1, Daly and Slabodnick won at No. 2 and McCartney and Mitoff won at No.3.

After five matches and one fall tournament -- the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional, Wagner tops BW in singles play with an 11-1 record and Daly is second at 10-2. In doubles play, both the No.1 tandem of Wagner and Crane and the No.2 duo of Daly and Slabodnick are each 7-1.

The Yellow Jackets now will prepare for their annual trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina where it will open play on Sunday, March 6 against Roanoke (Va.) College at 4:00 p.m. At Hilton Head, BW will play five matches in six days.
